How to Install the Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars on a 2018 Audi Q7

Colin: Hey guys, Colin here at etrailer and today we have a 2018 Audi Q7. Now, we're going to be doing a test fit of this Thule Wingbar Evo roof rack system. This is designed to mount to the fixed mounting points that are on your flush-mounted side rails for your Audi. So it's going to allow you to get some of your favorite rooftop accessories loaded up that might help you out in your everyday life. You could throw a cargo box up here so that you can get some extra cargo luggage thrown up on top of your roof, eliminate the need for a hitch-mounted cargo carrier and make more elbow and leg room on the inside of your vehicle for your passengers. You could throw a couple of bikes up here, and especially if they're mountain bikes and they're pretty muddy.

Definitely don't want to try to cram those inside the cargo area of your nice Audi. And it also means you don't have to add length on with a hitch mounted bike rack. You can even throw a couple of kayaks up here. With those kayaks, we know that you're not even going to get one of them in your Audi, so being able to get two of them on top, take a buddy or a spouse with you to go out to a lake, that'd be a huge advantage with this roof rack. Now on top, you can see we have these nice Wingbar Evo crossbars. These are 53 inches long. We have them in silver right now on top of our Audi, but if you think that black would look better with your Audi, then you can go ahead and pick up that kit.

It's available here, each trailer, just personal preference, what do you think will look best. These crossbars do have a nice aerodynamic shape. It's going to help cut down on that wind noise and drag, especially compared to a square or round bar roof rack system. And these rubber strips up top let us know we can utilize T slot accessories. To do that all we do is flip open the end cap, just like that. We don't have to pull it off.

And then we just slide our accessory between the two strips all the way to that desired location on top of our roof, tighten it down, close that end cap, and we're good to go.Now right here, we have the rapid podium foot pack from Thule. This is for the flush-mounted side rails, or even just the fixed points on here. We have a nice plastic lock right here. So let's go ahead and take it off. What you do is just get a flat tool like a screwdriver, maybe even a quarter that works too comes right off.

You can replace those little plastic locks with the Thule one key system. That'll just provide more security for your roof rack, but the plastic lock does do a pretty good job of making sure that end cap stays on.Now, we can see right here to podium foot pack. And then right here, we have the fit kit, which has this metal bracket and our pad right here. That's specifically designed for your Audi Q7. You can see how it's nice and flush with the side rail, that rubber padding, you're not going to have to worry about it harming or scratching the finish of your side rails. Then we've got the little stud bolt. This goes down and connects into the flush side rail, that fixed mounting point I was talking about, comes up and through, and then you just tighten it down with the included hardware. Then you got the two bolts securing the bracket to the podium foot pack. So it's a pretty straightforward how it all works. All really good connection points. So you know that you have a secure roof rack. Now, I do want to provide you guys with a few measurements. First, if we measure from the top of our flush side rail to the top of our Wingbar, it's about four and one quarter of an inch. That's something to keep in mind for any low clearance situations, that you have that height added to your roof when it's empty. Now, they shouldn't have to worry about that too much just because the Audi is a smaller crossover, so you shouldn't really have to worry about low clearance situations too often. If we go from the top of our roof, the bottom of our Wingbar, that's going to be about three and a half inches, now something to keep in mind is that you have enough space to get your clamp on accessories underneath your crossbar, without risking damaging the top of your roof. And that space is also enough to be able to open up your sun roof without any issues. As long as the roof rack is empty, you should have accessibility to open it up if you want, if it's a nice sunny day. One thing I do want to point out is if you have some clamp on accessories that are coming underneath the crossbar, depending on the accessory, it may make contact with your sun roof. So that's just something to keep in mind. I would always advise keeping your sun roof closed when you have an accessory installed on it.This roof rack does have a weight capacity of 220 pounds, but you do want to be sure you double-check with your Audi's owner's manual, make sure that your roof can handle that weight before you load it up. Now that I've shown you guys some of the features about this roof rack, we'll go ahead and walk you through how to get it installed. Now we'll start with getting these anchor bolts installed. All we got to do is pop open this cap, could just push on that side, we can open it up, like so. And then with the side that has that little ring on it, that's going to go down in there. We'll just thread it on. And then with the included tool that comes in the fit kit, just tighten it up and then repeat this for the other side. Now here on the table, we get the rest of our rear crossbar assembled, you can see already got part of the podium foot pack installed in the bottom of our Wingbar. We'll just flip it over, and what we'll do is first take this bracket that comes in the fit kit, and then the pad that comes in the fit kit. And basically you want to line up that center hole with the center hole on the bracket. It's just going to kind of slide into place right there, push it down, get to fit it in just like that. From there, we'll grab our podium foot pack, going to line up the side holes, just like that. We'll grab the hardware that comes in the podium foot pack kit, run it all the way through and thread it onto this little threaded bar right here on the backside. Doesn't have to be super tight, just get it threaded on and you should be good to go. We'll do the same for the other side. And then we'll just take the little tabs right here and slide it into the track on the bottom of our Wingbar, grab our end cap, put that on, we need to give it a good push. Maybe hit it a couple of times to get it in there. Once that's tight, we can get it onto our roof.So we're just going to raise it over top and you want to get that anchor bolt through the center hole, just like that. We'll do the same for over here. Then you can see it comes up and through right there. Now what we'll do from here is drop a lock washer over top of that anchor bolt, take this nut, thread it as far as we can. Take our little included wrench and tighten it down. It doesn't have to be super tight. Just get it pretty snug. Just definitely make sure that lock washer is engaged. You can see it is right there. Go one more half turn and that should be good right there. And we have this other included tool here. Want to make sure you tighten down the bolts that are on the podium foot pack as well. You can see it's very solid right there. So, now what we can do is grab our end cap and don't forget a little flat tool, like a screwdriver that we are using, put that on and lock it into place. Now with everything secure, I always like to go ahead and grab ahold of the crossbars. Give me a good shake. Make sure that everything is secure, go up and down, back and forth. You see that the entire vehicle is moving, so we know this thing's not going anywhere and now we're ready to load up our favorite two lead rooftop accessories, and then hit the road. Well, thank you all for watching and I hope this information helped you out, but that's going to do it for our look at the Thule Wingbar Evo roof rack system for our 2018 Audi Q7.
