How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 1998 Jeep Cherokee

Today on our 1998 Jeep Cherokee, well be installing a Draw-Tite Hitch part number 75054. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Next, well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch such as a draw bar, a bike rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 4. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 16. Now lets go ahead with installation.

Our first step, well go ahead and point out the attachment points here on the passenger side. Our rear and two center attachment points will be weld nuts already built into the frame and our forward attachment point will be this weld nut where the bolt is installed currently. Well remove that bolt and install a new hardware with the hitch. First, well start here on the passenger side. Well need to clean up with the weld nuts. To do this, well use some spray lubricant and a half-inch Nylon tube brush part number 814092 to thoroughly clean out the threads.

Well go ahead and take one of our new bolts and thread it into the weld nut to make sure its going to go nice and easily. After weve done that for all three attachments points, were ready to go ahead and remove the forward bolt that is currently installed. Well go ahead and set that aside as it will not be reinstalled and well be using new hardware with the hitch. Now we can move over to the driver side and point out the locations for our hitch which will be here. Well need to use the bolt leader provided with our install kit and our carriage bolt and block and feed them into the frame. The easiest way to do this is use the open end of the frame at the rear of the vehicle near the bumper.

Well go ahead and take our bolt leader, feed it to the attachment point at the end of the frame and well slide on our block and thread on our bolt. Once we go that, well go ahead and feed them both up into the frame and pull them into position. Now that theyre into position, well go ahead and remove the bolt leader and repeat the same process for the center two attachment points. Now were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. Its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners.

To secure our carriage bolt and block on the driver side, well be using the conical toothed washer and half-inch nut. Well move over to the passenger side and install our hardware. Now with our hitch being secured by the forward three fasteners on each side, well need to install the rearmost fastener. Well be using the handle nut, bolt and conical toothed washer, again with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch. The handle nut is designed so it can be bent in any fashion needed to get it into position. Well go ahead and do that and then put our bolt and conical toothed washer to the hitch and into the handle nut. Now with all our fasteners in place, we can go ahead and tighten them down. Next, well go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in instruction. That will complete the install of our Draw-Tite Hitch part number 75054 on our 1998 Jeep Cherokee. .
