How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2001 Dodge Dakota

Today on our 2001 Dodge Dakota we will be installing the CURT hitch trailer receiver part number C13280. Now here's what our hitch looks installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch. Such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is approximately five inches. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately fourteen and three quarter inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. We are going to begin here underneath the passenger side of the vehicle.

Well go ahead and point out the three attachment points. There's one here, one here on the lower part of the frame, and then one right here. We will need to remove the nut and the bolt at this attachment point. It will be the same over on the driver's side. Those are the two pieces that we'll need to remove.

We will not be re-installing these.Let's go over the hardware we will be using to attach our hitch. For the two upper locations, one on each side we will be using the smaller carriage bolt and the smaller flange nut. It will go through the hitch, through the frame and then you'll install the flange nut. Now for the other four locations, two on each side, we will be using the larger carriage bolt, square hole spacer block. That will go through the frame of the vehicle, through the hitch, where we'll then install the larger flange nut on the underside like that. This will be the same for the other four mounting locations. We'll go ahead and set our larger carriage bolts and square hole spacer blocks into position.

Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands as you raise the hitch up into position. We'll go ahead and install all the hardware loosely. Then we'll tighten it down. Torque it to the manufacturer's specifications. And that'll do it for the installation of our CURT trailer hitch receiver part number C13280 on our 2001 Dodge Dakota. .
