How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today on our 2004 Dodge Ram pickup, well be installing the Curt custom fit class five two-inch receiver hitch, part number c15409. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Next, were going to give you a couple of measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole, to the outer most edge of the bumper is three and three quarter inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 19 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, a bike rack or cargo carrier.

Now well go ahead with installation. To begin our install well first go ahead and point out the attachment points. Well have a total of six attachment points, three on each side. These attachment points are already predrilled holes in the frame and frame brackets by the manufacturer. Our forward attachment point will the predrilled hole here in the bottom of the frame, the rear attachment point will be the predrilled hole here at the end of the frame and then we have the frame bracket with a predrilled hole also. Securing the hitch at the frame attachment points will be the nine-sixteenth carriage bolts and blocks. Well be using the rectangle block for our forward attachment point and the square block for our rear attachment point.

For the bracket attachment points, well use a nine-sixteenth bolt, nine-sixteenth flat washer, spacer blocks and flange nuts. To get our hardware into the frame well use the nine-sixteenth liter supplied with our install kit. Starting with our forward attachment point, well take the spacer block and slide it into the end of the frame all the way up to our attachment point. Quick tech tip, to make it easy you can put your finger in the attachment point at the frame and slide the block hard enough to butt up against your finger then well just lock it into position. Well then take our pull wire, go through the frame, through the block and out the access hole in the frame. There are two access holes, one on the inside and the outside of the frame, either will work.

Once we have the pull wire outside of the frame, well thread on a carriage bolt, beat it into the frame and then pull it into position. For our rear attachment point well take the block, slide it into position over the attachment point and then take the carriage bolt, go to the side of the frame, go through the tube and down into the block. Note each process we do here to one side we get to repeat identically on the opposite side. Now with our hardware in place, were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. Its a good idea to get an extra pair of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. Bring the hitch up into position and then feed our bolt liter to the second predrilled attachment point on the hitch. Once we bring it tight to the hitch, we can install the nine-sixteenth flange nut at the rear attachment point.

Once its securing the weight of the hitch, well go ahead and remove the bolt liter and install the forward flange nut. Next, well install the bracket hardware. Sandwiching two spacer blocks between the hitch and the frame bracket, we take a nine-sixteenth bolt and flat washer feeding from the outside towards the inside of the vehicle and installing a third spacer block and flange nut to secure it. Now with all the hardware in place well go ahead and tighten it down starting with our frame fasteners first. Once we have everything tightened down, well go ahead and torque the specifications as indicated in the instruction. Now with our hitch secured and torque to specifications we are ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of the Curt custom fit class five two-inch receiver, part number C15409 on our 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup. .
