How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today, on our 2004 Dodge Ram pickup we will install the Curt Custom Fit Class 5, 2 1/2 inch receiver tube hitch, part number C15809. This is what our hitch will look like once installed. Next, we will go ahead and give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 3-1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 19 1/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. Now, we will go ahead with installation.

To begin our install we will first go ahead and point out the attachment points. We will have a total of six attachment points, three on each side. These attachment points are already predrilled holes in the frame and frame brackets by the manufacturer. Our forward attachment point will be the predrilled hole here in the bottom of the frame. The rear attachment point will be the predrilled hole here at the end of the frame and then we have the frame bracket with a predrilled hole also. Securing the hitch at the frame attachment points will be the 9/16 carriage bolts and blocks.

We will be using the rectangle block for our forward attachment point and the square block for our rear attachment point. For the bracket attachment points we will be using 9/16 bolt, 9/16 flat washer, spacer blocks, and flange nut. To get our hardware into the frame we will use a 9/16 bolt leader supplied with our install kit. Starting with our forward attachment point we will take this spacer block and slide it into the end of the frame all the way up to our attachment point. Quick tech tip: To make it easy you can put your finger in the attachment point and the frame and slide the block hard enough to bud up against your finger. Then we will just walk it into position.

We will then take our pull wire, go through the frame, through the block and out the access hole in the frame. There are two access holes, one on the inside and outside of the frame, either will work. Note each process we do here to one side will get repeat identically on the opposite side. Once we have the pull wire outside the frame we will thread on our carriage bolt, feed it into the frame and then pull it into position. For our rear attachment point we will take the block slide it into position over the attachment point and then take the carriage bolt, go to the side of the frame, go through the tube and down into the block. Now with our hardware in place we are ready to go ahead and install the hitch. Its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to hold the hitch while you install the fasteners.

We will bring the hitch up into position and then feed our bolt leader through the second predrilled attachment point on the hitch. Once we bring it tight to the frame we can install the 9/16 flange nut at the rear attachment point. Once its securing the weight of the hitch we will go ahead and remove the bolt leader and install the forward flange nut. Next, we will install the bracket hardware. Quick tech tip: As we are putting our spacer box in place we may need to use a screw driver to help line them up so we can install the bolt. We will take our 9/16 bolt and flat washer feeding it from the outside towards the inside of the vehicle. Installing a third spacer block and flange nut to secure it. Now, with all the hardware in place we will go ahead and tighten it down starting with our frame fasteners first. Once we have everything tightened down we will go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch secured and torqued to specifications we are ready to hit the road. And that will complete the install of the Curt Customer Fit Class 5, 2 1/2 inch receiver tube hitch, part number C15809 on our 2004 Dodge Ram pickup. .
