How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2004 Ford F-250

Today on our 2004 Ford F250 well be installing the Reese Titan trailer hitch, part number 45297. This is what our hitch will look like once its in position. Next well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you when selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is two inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 17 and a half inches. Now lets go ahead with installation.

There are four attachment points on each side for a total of eight between the hitch and the frame. With our spare tire already lowered and removed were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. Well be using the new hardware to secure the hitch to the vehicle. These holes are already predrilled into the frame so we can go ahead and take our new 14 millimeter bolts and conical tooth washers and drop them through the predrilled holes in the frame on each side. Keep in mind each process we do on one side will get repeated identically on the opposite side.

Now were ready to go ahead and put our hitch into position. Its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install your fasteners. Well be securing the hitch to the frame using the conical tooth washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch and the 14 millimeter nuts. Well install each fastener finger tight at this time. Next well need to loosen the hardware securing the bumper bracket to the bumper.

This will allow us to drop our three-sixteenths spacers into position between the bracket and the bumper. Once we have our spacers in position well then go ahead and tighten up the hardware enough to hold the spacers securely. Next well need to install the vertical attachment plate. To do this well remove the fasteners securing the bumper mounting bracket to the frame. By removing the two nuts and bolt plate we can then slide the vertical attachment plate between the bumper bracket and the frame.

Then well reinstall the manufacturers hardware finger tight. Well install the two fasteners and secure it with an additional conical tooth washer and 14 millimeter nut. Now with all our hardware in place were ready to go ahead and tighten it down. In order to adjust the bumper to the hitch well go ahead and slide a block of wood on top of the receiver tube making sure we keep enough clearance between the bumper and the hitch. Then well go ahead and tighten down the frame fasteners first. Now with our frame fasteners secure we can go ahead and tighten down our additional hardware. Now with everything tightened well go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all our fasteners torqued to specifications and our hitch secure well go ahead and remove the block and thatll complete the install of the Reese Titan hitch, part number 45297, on our 2004 Ford F250.
