How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2005 Mazda Tribute

Today on our 2005 Mazda Tribute, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite hitch, part number 75751. This is what our hitch will look like once installed. Next we'll give you a couple measurements to assist you selecting accessories for your new hitch. The center of the hitch-pin hole is even with the outer most edge of the bumper. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 16 inches. This will assist you selecting accessories, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. Now we'll go ahead with installation. First we're going to point out our attachment points.

We have a total of six attachment points, three in each side. Each one of our attachment points are pre-drilled holes in the frame by the manufacturer and it does not have any weld nuts for this application, therefore we'll use the 7/16 hardware, which will be a 7/16 carriage bolt and block, along with 7/16 conical toothed washer and nut. We'll use a 7/16 pull wire provided with our install kit to get our hardware into the frame. Note on the passenger side, it may be necessary to slightly enlarge the elongated hole so that we can get the block and carriage bolt into the frame. Now we're ready to put our hardware into the frame. Taking our pull wire going through the forward attachment point and out the lower access hole. There we can slide on our block and thread on the carriage bolt.

Feed them both into the frame and pull them into position. Once in place we'll go ahead and remove the pull wire. Now we repeat the same process for our forward attachment on the passenger side. We're ready to install the hitch. We'll take our hitch, feed it up over the exhaust on the passenger side and bring the driver's side up to the frame. Now a quick tech tip.

To assist in holding our hitch in place, we'll take an extra or spare bolt and just feed it through the rear attachment point on the driver's side, which will help hold the weight of the hitch. Now we can go ahead and install our conical toothed washer with the teeth of the washer facing the hitch, and our 7/16 nut for our forward attachment point. Note each process we do to one side, will get repeatedly identically on the opposite side. Now we're ready to install the hardware for the center and rear attachment points. Take the pull leader, feed it through attachment point and through the access hole. Again we'll slide on the block and thread on the carriage bolt.

Feed them both into the frame, pull them into position, remove the bolt leader and install the hardware. Once we have all the hardware in place and installed finger tight, we'll go ahead and run it down. Next we'll go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with our hitch secured and torqued to specifications, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of Draw-Tite 2 inch receiver tube hitch, part number 75751, on our 2005 Mazda Tribute. .
