How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2006 Honda Pilot

All right, today on this 2006 Honda Pilot, we're going to install part number 75599 from Draw-Tite. All right, this is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on a vehicle. Next, we'll give you some measurements to help you in selecting some accessories, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 18-1/2". From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be about 3-1/4". Now I'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed.

All right, the first thing we need to do is go ahead and remove the tie-down hook on the driver's side. This will not be reinstalled. There will be three bolts we have to remove. Now the three bolts that are removed will be the same attachment points for the hitch. Now that's it for the driver's side.

Now we'll go ahead and work over on the passenger side. There's three existing threaded holes that we'll have to clean out before we can install our hardware. We'll clean it out with some spray lubricant and then use the tube brush to help clean out the threads. The tube brush will be part number 814092. Now the older the vehicle is, the more time this will take.

Eventually it may need a thread tap to help clean out the threads. Okay, once we have all three holes cleaned out, we can go ahead and install the hitch. First, we'll go ahead and show you how the hardware interacts to the hitch. We'll take our bolt and our conical-tooth washer, put them together, and then install them through the hitch as shown here. This will be for all fasteners, all the way around the hitch.

So now with an extra set of hands, we'll go ahead and hold the hitch up and install the hardware. On the passenger side, we'll slip it over the top of the exhaust, then we'll put it up against our frame, then we'll install our hardware. Sometimes you may have to push the heat shield out of the way to get a little bit of working room. With all our hardware loosely installed, we'll go ahead and tighten down the bolts, and then torque them down as specified in the instructions. And with that, that will finish it for part number 75599 from Draw-Tite, on our 2006 Honda Pilot.
