How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2007 Honda Pilot

Today on our 2007 Honda Pilot, we'll be installing the DrawTite Hitch, part number 75599. Here's what our hitch will look like once installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you couple measurements to assist you selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 3 1/4". From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 17 3/4". This will assist your selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier.

Now we'll go ahead with the installation. To begin our install, we'll first go ahead and point out the attachment points. We'll have a total of 6 attachment points, 3 on each side. On the driver's side, we'll be removing the manufacturer's tow hook and using the same 3 attachment points for the tow hook that we will for the hitch. On the passenger's side, we use the manufacturer's weld nuts that are built into the frame, but are currently exposed. Because they're exposed to the elements, they're going to build up with rust, dust, dirt, and debris and get corroded over time.

We'll need to thoroughly clean out the threads of each weld nut before we attempt to install our new fasteners. To clean them out, we're going to use a spray lubricant and 1/2" nylon tube brush, part number 814092. Then, once we have them thoroughly cleaned out, we'll go ahead and run one of the new fasteners in to make sure it will go nice and easily. Now, with our weld nuts cleaned out on the passenger side, we'll move over to the driver's side and remove the tow hook. We'll remove the fasteners and tow hook and set them aside as they will not be re-installed.

Now we're ready to put our hitch in place. Take the hitch, feed it up over the exhaust on the passenger side and then bring the driver's side tight to the frame. We'll install each fastener finger tight until we have them all in place. We'll be using the new 12 mm bolt and 1/2" conical tooth washer. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch. Keep in mind each process we do on one side we're going to repeat identically on the opposite side.

With all of our hardware in place, we can now go ahead and tighten and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with all our fasteners tightened down and torqued to specifications, this will complete the install of the DrawTite Hitch, part number 75599, on our 2007 Honda Pilot. .
