How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Toyota Highlander

Today on our 2008 Toyota Highlander, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch - part number 75726. Here's what the hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch and hull to the outermost edge of the bumper, it's pretty much even, but the hitch receiver tube does stick out approximately two and a half inches past the outermost edge of the bumper. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately fourteen and a half inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. Now you'll notice we've already gone and lowered the spare tire down to make the installation just a little bit easier. Next we'll need to go ahead and remove the two plastic appearance panels - one on the driver's side as well as one on the passenger's side. To remove these, you'll need to remove a combination of bolts as well as push fasteners. The bolts that you'll need to remove require a ten millimeter socket. The push pin fasteners, you can remove by taking a flathead screwdriver and working out the centerpiece of the push pin fastener, and then the rest of the fastener will pull out. Now that we have both plastic appearance panels removed, we're going to need to remove each of the tow hooks.

There's two bolts that hold each tow hook in on each side. We'll need to remove these and these will not be replaced. Now let's go over the mounting hardware locations. We'll be reusing each of the existing weld nuts that we removed the bolt from the tow hooks from. As well as over here on the driver's side, we'll go a little further forward and we'll need to remove a rubber plug to expose another existing weld nut. Then we'll reach up on the side of the frame rail and have to pull out two more rubber plugs two expose two more existing weld nuts. Now for the passenger's side, we'll be using the two existing tow hook weld nuts and then we'll need to reach up along the side of the frame and pull out two rubber plugs to expose two more existing weld nuts. Now the hardware that we'll be using at all nine locations is an M10 Hex Bolt and a 3/8 conical tooth washer - making sure that the teeth on the washer are facing towards the hitch when installed. Now we're ready to put our hitch up.

It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. Now you'll notice on the passenger's side, there is some lines that are for the rear AC and heater unit. You want to make sure that you don't pinch or crush them as you're raising the hitch up into position. We'll go ahead and put at least one set of hardware in on each side of the hitch to hold it in place. Now we can go ahead and put the remaining hardware into the proper locations. Once all the hardware's been installed, we'll go ahead and tighten everything down followed by torquing it to the manufactures specification. Now that we have all the hardware torqued down, we can go ahead and reinstall the appearance panel on the passenger's side in the reverse order that we removed it. The driver's side appearance panel will not be reinstalled. And with that, that'll conclude our installation of the Draw-Tite Hitch.

Part number 75726 on our 2008 Toyota Highlander. .
