How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Toyota Prius

Today, on our 2008 Toyota Prius, we'll be installing the Curt Hitch, part number C11468. This is what our hitch will look like, once installed. Next, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements to assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. In the center of the hitch pin hole, to the outermost edge of the bumper is 2 3/4 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 9 3/4 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. To begin our install, we'll need to remove the under body panel on the driver's side, by removing the push pin fasteners and screws.

To remove the push pin fasteners, we'll use a flat head screwdriver to pry the center of the fastener out and then remove it completely. With the fasteners removed, simply pop the panel free and set it aside for re-installation later. Next, we'll need to remove the two hooks on the driver and passenger side. By removing the two bolts on each tow hook, we can go ahead and remove the tow hooks and set them aside, as they will not be reinstalled. The attachment points for the two hooks will serve as the attachment points for our hitch. We're ready to put our hitch up into position.

It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch. Bring the passenger side up over the exhaust first, and then raise the driver's side into position. We'll use the included 10 millimeter bolts and conical tooth washers to secure our hitch to the frame. Make sure that the teeth of the washer are facing the hitch while we install the fasteners. We'll install the bolts finger tight until we have them all in place. Now, with all six fasteners in place, we'll go ahead and tighten them down.

Next, we'll torque to specifications, as indicated in the instructions. We'll need to cut out a small section of the under body panel, in order to install it. We can use a rotary tool or pair of cutters to remove the section. After we remove the section, we can go ahead and reinstall the under body panel with the manufacturer's fasteners. Now, with everything reinstalled, we're ready to hit the road.

That does it for the install of our Curt hitch, part number C11468 on our 2008 Toyota Prius. .
