How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Dodge Journey

Today on this 2009 Dodge Journey, were going to install Hidden Hitch part number 87487. This will be comparable to the Draw-Tite Hitch part number 75648. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost point of the bumper is 1-1/2 inches. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 13-3/4 inches. Now, lets go ahead with the installation.

Ok, before we can begin installing the hitch, we'll need to lower the exhaust. Before I remove any of the hangers from the exhaust, Im going to put a safety strap underneath so we can control how far and fast the exhaust will fall. Alright, with our safety strap in place, weve got three hangers for each muffler to remove. This is the dual exhaust system. Before I try to remove them, Im going to use a little bit of a spray lubricant on the hangers to make it easier to remove and reinstall later.

Alright, there is the driver's side. Ill go ahead and repeat the same process in the passenger's side. With all my hangers sprayed down, were now ready to go ahead and lower the exhaust. Before we can lower the exhaust in the passenger's side, we'll need to remove the ground strap that goes from the frame to the exhaust hanger. Alright, now we can go ahead and start removing our rubber hangers.

With our exhaust lowered, we're now ready to go ahead and start installing our hardware up into the frame. Ok, first I want to point out our mounting locations. We have two mounting locations on each side. Our rear attachment points are going to be a block and a 2-1/4-inch carriage bolt that well put into the frame. Theres access on the end of the frame to slide them in to position.

Each process we do it here on the driver's side well repeat identically on the passenger's side. Next, we need to go ahead and prepare our wedges that are going to get installed in between the hitch and the frame and underneath the hitch and sandwiched in position. The top of the wedge or the flat part of the wedge will go towards the rear of the vehicle on the top and the skinny side will go towards the rear on the bottom. Let me go ahead and take some tape to hold this in position while I put our hitch in place. Using some clear tape, we can go ahead and attach them to the hitch and then Ill just take a utility knife, poke a hole for our hardware to go through. Theres the setup for the passenger's side. I will repeat the same process for the setup on the driver's side. Alright, with our wedges taped in position, were now ready now to go ahead and install the hitch. Its a good time to get an extra set of hands to help you put the hitch in place. Be careful not to push your rear fasteners back up into the frame when you put your hitch in position. Well be fastening them with conical toothed washers, teeth of the washers facing the hitch and a 1/2-inch nut. Im just going to tighten our fasteners down finger tight until we get our forward fasteners in position. Alright, with our rear fasteners in place, were now ready to go ahead and install our forward fasteners. The forward fastener will be using a handle nut that will feed up into the frame and then run a 1/2-inch bolt and conical toothed washer to secure the hitch. Alright, with all of our fasteners in place, we can go ahead and tighten them down. Alright, now with all of our fasteners tightened down we can go ahead and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now, with all of our fasteners torqued to specifications, we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Remember, once you get your exhaust re-secured to reinstall the ground strap. Alright, with the ground strap reinstalled, we can go ahead and remove our safety strap and that completes the install of our Hidden Hitch part number 87487 on our 2009 Dodge Journey.
