How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Ford Escape

All right, today on this 2009 Ford Escape, were going to install part number 13650 from Curt. This is what the hitch looks like when its installed on the vehicle. Next well give you some measurements thatll help you out in selecting some accessories such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be 17 inches and from the center of the hitch pinhole to the edge of the bumper will be about 1 inches. Now Ill go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First thing were going to do is go ahead and show you how the hardware attaches to the vehicle and the hitch. From the inside of the frame the carriage bolt and the block we ran together through the frame and then through the hitch.

On the other side of the hitch will be conical tooth washer and nut. When you install a conical tooth washer, always make sure the teeth in the washer always goes up towards the hitch. Now were looking at the driver side fastener going towards the front. On the passenger side there will be an additional block installed between the frame and the hitch. Now well go ahead and start installing our hardware. Well run our bolt leader through the frame in the hole were going to use and out the end of the frame.

Then well thread on our block and then our bolt and then pull it through. Okay, were done with one side and well go head and repeat it on the other side. With an extra set of hands well go ahead and hold the hitch up and well attach our conical tooth washer and nut. All right, now with our hitch in place, we can go ahead and install the rest of the fasteners. Well use two holes that are on the inside edge of the frame. Once again, well take our bolt leader and run it through the hole and out the end of the frame.

Once again our block and our bolt will be pulled through the inside to the outside and then well install our conical tooth washer and nut. All right, were done with our passenger side, lets go and repeat the same process over on the driver side. Okay, will all our hardware loosely installed well go ahead and tighten it down. On the passenger side with the exhaust, on some vehicles exhaust you can just simply push out of the way and tighten it down, however on this one it is right below the bolt, so were going to temporarily disconnect it from the exhaust hangers. Well spray down the rubber hangers with some lubricant and then pry them off. With all of our hardware loosely installed, well go ahead and tighten down the bolts and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions.

Once everything is tightened up, well go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Thatll finish it for our install of part number 13650 from Curt on our 2009 Ford Escape. .
