How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Acura MDX

Today, on this 2012 Acura MDX, we are going to install part number 13354 from Curt. All right, this is what the hitch will look like once its installed on the vehicle. Next, we will go ahead and give you some measurements that will help you out in selecting some accessories such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be 17 inches and from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper will be 3-1/2 inches. Now, Ill go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. First thing we need to do is go ahead and lower the spare tire and get it out of our way. Then, next we will go ahead and lower the exhaust by removing the two rear most rubber hangers.

We will spray them down with some lubricant; make them a little easier to remove. Now, we are done with the rubber hangers on the driver side now we will move over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. Then, we will go ahead and unbolt the heat shields. We are finished removing the heat shield on the driver side, now we are going to repeat the same process over on the passenger side. Before we put our hitch up we will take a moment to clean out the threads. Now, since its a brand new vehicle it should not be much of a problem, but we will spray it down with some lubricant and then use a tube brush to help clean out the threads we will be using part number 814092.

Now, the older the vehicle is the more time this will take, we will clean out the threads and then put the hitch bolt in to make sure it threads in okay. Now, the older a vehicle gets the more dirt and debris gets contained in there, you may have to use a thread tap over time. All right, next we can go ahead and raise the hitch in position. Now, its a good idea to have an extra set of hands to help you do this while you install the hardware. Now, when we install our hardware we will install the bolt with the conical toothed washers, we will make sure that the teeth are facing towards the hitch. Once all the bolts are installed we can go ahead and tighten them down evenly on both sides and then torque the bolts as specified in the instructions.

Then, we can install the heat shields and then the exhaust. The spare tire can be re-installed. With that, that wll finish it for our install on part number 13354 from Curt on our 2012 Acura MDX.
