Today on our 2012 Chevy Traverse, were going to be installing the Draw-Tite hitch part number 75528. This is what our hitch will look like once its installed. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you in selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper is 7 inches, from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 18 inches. This will assist you in selecting accessories such as a draw bar, a bike rack or a cargo carrier. Now lets go ahead with the installation.
Before we can install the hitch, well first need to remove the rear fascia door. There are two attachment points here, well go ahead and turn them 45 degrees and go ahead and remove the fascia door as it will not be reinstalled. Next, to give myself a little working room, well go ahead and lower the exhaust. To lower the exhaust, well first put a safety strap underneath of it so we can control how far and how fast it will fall. And, secondly, well use a spray lubricant on the rubber isolators.
Next, Im going to go ahead and take my pry bar and remove the two exhaust hangers. Theres one on the inside and one on the outside of the muffler. Well have a total of 6 attachment points, two weld nuts on each frame rail and two at the center where well be using our handle nuts. Before we attempt to install our hitch, were going to clean out the weld nuts in the frame. So using some spray lubricant and -inch nylon tube brush part number 814092, well thoroughly clean out the weld nuts.
Quick tech tip: I recommend to go ahead and take one of the new 12mm bolts and thread it in to the weld nut to make sure that it will go nice and easy. Now that we have all of our attachment points cleaned out, were ready to go ahead and install the hitch. Well secure it to the frame at the weld nuts first. Again, well be using the 12mm bolts and conical tooth washers with the teeth and washer facing the hitch. Ill set the passenger side up on top of the exhaust muffler and attach the driver side first.
Now with both fasteners finger tight on the driver side, well move over the passenger side and repeat the same process. Now that we have all four frame fasteners in place, well move to the center attachment points. Well feed the handle nut into the bumper beam, take our spacer block, set it on top of the hitch attachment point and then take our -inch bolt with conical tooth washer and thread it from underneath into the handle nut. Again, Ill run both of these down finger tight. Now with all our attachment points in place, we can go ahead and tighten them down. With our hitch secured, well now go back and tighten each attachment points to specifications as indicated in the instructions. Now with that complete, we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. With the exhaust reinstalled, we can go ahead and remove the safety strap and that will complete the installation of our Draw-TIte hitch part number 75528 on our 2012 Chevy Traverse.
