How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Dodge Ram

Today on our 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 were gonna install Kurt hitch part number 14374. Here are a couple of measurements thatll assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch, from the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost point of the bumper is 2 and a half inches, from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 19 and a half inches. Now lets go ahead with the installation. Weve already gone ahead and removed the spare tire, this will make it easier to install our hitch. Our first step to installing the hitch is gonna be the removing the frame bolts, this is the forward frame fastener for the bumper tube bracket, theres one on each side, each side is identical so each process I do here on the driver side will be repeated identically on the passenger side. Lets go ahead and remove the fasteners now, hang on to these fasteners as they will be reinstalled when we put the hitch in place.

Our forward fasteners well be using our pull wires supplied in our installed kit, and our 1 inch by 3 inch block and our half-inch carriage bolt. This is the reverse pull method so well take our pull wire, slide our block on and then thread our carriage bolt on to the end of the pull wire then well feed the bolt into the frame first, this is our forward attachment point, large access hole thats already in the frame, feed our bolt in first and then our block, and then well pull them both back towards the opening of the hole to see them in place. Now with them in place Ill go ahead and remove the pull wire, with our forward fasteners installed we now need to go ahead and install the center fasteners. To do this well go back to our pull wire, feed it through the attachment point up to the bumper tube. When I come out the end of the bumper tube and then well take our inch and a half by 3 inch block, slide it on to the pull wire and then a half inch carriage bolt and thread it on to the end of our pull wire.

Take both of those slide them up into the bumper tube and pull them into position. Now once its in position I can go ahead and just lightly push it back into the frame so theres nothing in the way we can put the hitch in place then well use the pull wire to thread it through the hitch and pull the fasteners into position once we have our hitch up into place. Again each process we do here on the driver side will be repeated identically on the passenger side. Now were ready to go ahead and put our hitch in place. Its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fastener.

Keep in mind that for your rear frame fastener youll be using the carriage bolt that we removed earlier. Then we can just go ahead and thread all our flange nut, now weve got our frame fasteners in were here at the center attachment points we need to go ahead and remove the pull wire. Quick tech tip: hold some side pressure on your hardware so that it doesnt fall back into the bumper tube. Now we can just go ahead and thread all our flange nuts. Alright with all our fasteners installed we can go ahead and tighten them down.

Now with our fasteners tighten down we can go ahead and torque into specifications as indicated in the instructions, with all our fasteners torque to specifications thatll complete the installation of our Kurt hitch part number 14374 on our 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. .
