How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2012 Ford Escape

Today on our 2012 Ford Escape, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite hitch, part number 75751. This is what our hitch will look like once installed. Next we'll be giving you a couple measurements to assist you selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch -pin hole, to the outer most edge of the bumper is 1 inches. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 18 inches. This will assist you selecting accessories, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier. To begin our install, we'll first go in and point out the attachment points. For this application we'll be using the pre-drilled holes in the frame by the manufacturer, there'll be a total of six attachment points - three in each side.

Over on the passenger side we'll need to lower the exhaust, to make it easier to get our hitch and hardware into position. To lower the exhaust we'll spray the rear exhaust hanger with some spray lubricant and then using our pry bar to remove the rubber isolator from the rubber hanger. Now we'll go ahead and start putting our hardware in place, using the 7/16ths pull-wire provided with our install kit, we'll go through the forward attachment point and out the access hole towards the rear of the frame. There we can slide on the block and thread on our carriage bolt. We'll feed the block and bolt into the frame, pull it down to the attachment point. Then we'll go ahead and remove the pull-wire and repeat the same process on the other side. Now with both forward attachment point hardware in the frame, it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while we install the conical toothed washer and nut, the teeth of the washer facing the hitch.

We'll install the hardware finger tight until we have it all in place. With the forward attachment hardware holding the hitch in position, we'll go ahead and install the center and rear attachment hardware, repeating the same process of going through the attachment point and out the access hole, sliding on a block, threading on a carriage bolt, pulling them into position and then securing them with conical toothed washer and nut. Once we have all our hardware in place, we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Next we'll torque to specifications as indicated in instructions. Now with our hitch secured and torqued to specifications, we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. With the exhaust reinstalled, this will complete the install of our Draw-Tite 2 inch receiver tube hitch, part number, 75751, on our 2012 Ford Escape.
