How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2013 Subaru Impreza

Today on our 2013 Subaru Impreza Hatchback, were going to be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch receiver, part number C11286.Now, heres what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now, well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground, we have 10 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, we have 2 inches. Now, lets go ahead and install our hitch. Now, were going to begin over here on the driver side. Were going to need to remove two rubber plugs to open up our mounting locations. One is right here, and the other one is right here.

Well go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. Now, with our rubber plugs removed, well go ahead and point out the mounting locations. Over here on the passenger side, this will be the rear mounting location, and here will be the forward mounting location, as well as the access hole to install the hardware into the vehicles frame. Well go ahead and repeat the same process over here on the driver side.Next, were going to need to enlarge our access hole here. Were going to first drill a small hole on the back side here to help us enlarge the hole a little easier. Next, were going to take a round file on our drill or you can just use a hand file if you choose.

Were going to make the hole be a little bit cleaner as well as open it up the rest of the way to allow our hardware to be installed. Now that we have the access hole opened up, lets go ahead and test to make sure that our hardware will fit into the frame. Now, for the rear mounting location on each side, were going to be using a 7/16 carriage bolt, a square hole spacer block. Its the block looks like this. Has a smaller hole. Well also be using a 7/16 flange nut to secure the hitch. Now, to install the carriage bolt and the spacer block into the vehicles frame, well be using a smaller 7/16 bolt leader or fish wire to do that.

Now, to install our hardware, well take the coiled into the fish wire, go through the mounting location. Well then come out the access hole that we just enlarged. Slide the spacer block on followed by the carriage bolt. Well then push both items back up into the vehicles frame, and pull it out the mounting location.Go ahead and remove the fish wire. Now, lets point out our hardware that well be using for the forward mounting location on both sides.

Now, the forward hardware that well be using is a half inch carriage bolt, a larger square hole spacer block, those will be installed in the vehicles frame, and in between the hitch and vehicles frame around hole spacer block will be installed followed by a half inch flange nut.To install the forward mounting location, well be using the reverse pull wire method. Take the square hole spacer block, slide it unto the coiled in, and thread our carriage bolt in place, then push the carriage bolt into the frame followed by the spacer block. Well then pull it back down into position.Well go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. Now, its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. With the hitch up into position, well go ahead and loosely install the nut for the rear mounting location on each side. Once that its done on both sides, well go ahead and take our round hole spacer block, slide it in between the hitch, the vehicles frame. Go ahead and do this for both sides.Once we have the round hole spacer block in place, we can go ahead and install the half inch flange nut on both sides. With all of our hardware installed, we can go ahead and tighten everything down, and then torque it to the manufacturers specification. That will do it for the installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C11286 on our 2013 Subaru Impreza Hatchback. .
