How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2013 Toyota Prius

Today on this 2013 Toyota Prius we'll be installing a Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 24847. This is what the hitch looks like installed. Here's some measurements to help you select some accessories for your hitch such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack or a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper is approximately one and a half inches. From the top of the receiver opening to the ground is approximately 11 1/4 inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. To begin with you'll need to locate the four bolts that'll need to be removed from the factory.

The first two are on the driver's side and they are holding up the tow hook. You will need to use an extension on your socket to reach up in there and be able to pull the bolts out. Be careful with removing these bolts and when you pull them you down don't let them slip out of the socket and fall into the underbody panel of the vehicle as they may be difficult to retrieve.Once you have the tow hook removed we will move over to the passenger side where you'll remove the two bolts holding up the exhaust hanger. You may need to pull the exhaust over to one side or the other to allow you to get the socket as well as the extension up in there to remove the two bolts. You may also find that a wrench is easier to use but in this case we have a swivel head on the end of our extension. Now that you have these four bolts removed you will not reuse them.

Now that we have the old hardware removed here's what our new hardware will look like on our Draw-Tite hitch. You will see that you will use a bolt and as well as a conical tooth washer. You want to make sure that the conical teeth face towards the hitch. Now we're ready to go ahead and install our hitch. You want to make sure that on the passenger side you insert the hitch in between the frame and the exhaust hanger. The bolt will go through the exhaust hanger, through the hitch and into the frame.

Now that we have a bolt on one side let's move to the other side and loosely put one bolt in there. Once you have all four bolts installed go ahead and snug them. Once they are snugged now you can go ahead and torque them to the manufacturer's specifications. You will notice on the passenger side one of the bolts because of the exhaust hanger was a little difficult to get to. In this situation we used a crow's foot to help tighten down that bolt. That'll do it for the installation of our Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 24847 on our 2013 Toyota Prius..
