How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2014 Ford Focus

Today on our 2014 Ford Focus 5-Door, were going to be installing the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 24872. Now here is what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now well go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a cargo carrier or a bicycle rack. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately 2 inches. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 10-3/4 inches. Now lets go ahead and install our hitch. Lets go ahead and begin by pointing out the mounting locations.

Theres a total of six mounting locations, three on each side. Well begin over here on the driver side. Well be using this location here and here, as well as this location right here on the side of the frame. Now over here on the passenger side, it will be a mere image of the driver side. Next were going to need to remove the two bolts from each side that hold the exhaust hanger to the vehicles frame.

We will not be reusing the hardware that secures the exhaust hanger to the frame. Well go ahead and move over to the driver side where well repeat the same process. With our hitch held up into position, well go ahead and mark with a paint marker the area of the heat shield thats covered by the hitch, as were going to need to trim this area out on both sides. Were going to go ahead and cut just a little bit extra on each side to make sure that its not going to touch the hitch. To do that, were just going to use a pair of tin snips. Now that we have our driver side trimmed out, well go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side.

Next lets go over the hardware that were going to use to install our hitch. Now well begin with the hardware used for the hole on each side here on the frame rail. That will be a carriage bolt, square hole spacer block, a conical tooth washer, making sure the teeth faced towards the hitch when installed, and a hex nut. All of these will be up here in the vehicles frame like that. Now to get the carriage bolt and the square hole spacer block into the vehicles frame, well be using this access hole here, as well as the fish wire or a bolt leader to install it. Being that this right here is the access hole, well notice the square hole spacer block fits in there fine, but the carriage bolt doesnt quite fit. Were going to need to take a pile and open up this hole just a little bit to allow the carriage bolt to fit in properly.

To speed things up, were going to be using a round pile on our drill. But just a regular hand pile will work just as well. Well go ahead and repeat that same process over on the other side. Next lets go over the hardware used in each of the two mounting locations on each side that hold the exhaust bracket in place, as well as well secure the hitch to the vehicle. Well be using an 8 millimeter bolt, a 5/16s lock washer, and a 5/16s flat washer. Next were going to go ahead and take the isolator strip. Well go ahead and just cut it in a half. Were going to go ahead and apply it here and here to the hitch. Well peel of the back and then attach it here to our hitch or feet for the other one. Now these strips come with the kit. The reason why you need to put them on here is to help prevent corrosion between the two different types of metals between the exhaust hanger bracket and the hitch itself. Well repeat the same process over on the other side of the hitch. Next were going to go ahead and raise the hitch up into position. Its a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you do this. Well realign each of the exhaust hangers over the holes, and then well install the new hardware into the hole securing the hitch, as well as the exhaust back up into position. Now with the hitch up in place and our four mounting locations installed securing the hitch and the exhaust hangers back up, next were ready to install the hardware into each of the side mounting locations. Next were going to go ahead and take the coil bend of the fish wire or pull wire. Well go through the mounting location here on the side.Itll then come out the access hole. Well then install the square hole spacer block, followed by threading the carriage bolt on. Well then put the spacer block up into the frame, followed by the carriage bolt. Well then pull them up into position. When you remove the pull wire or fish wire, you want to make sure that the bolt does not fall back down into the vehicles frame. With the carriage bolt hold up into position, we can install the conical tooth washer and the hex nut. Well go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. Now that we have all of our hardware loosely installed, well go ahead and make sure that the hitch looks good, that its centered up in where we want it before we tighten it down. Now with our hitch in position, we can go ahead and tighten down all the hardware. Then well come back and torque it to the manufacturers specification. That will do it for the installation of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 24872, on our 2014 Ford Focus 5-Door. .
