How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2014 Nissan Murano

Today on our 2014 Nissan Murano, we're going to be installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 13577. Now here's what our hitch looks like on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground we have approximately fifteen and a quarter inches. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of the bumper, we have approximately four and a half inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. Now before we begin our installation, we're going to need install a safety strap up underneath the exhaust.

Next we're going to need to remove four rubber exhaust hangers in order to lower our exhaust down to give ourself 00:00:53 a little more working room. We'll go ahead and begin over here on the driver's side and point out the exhaust hangers that we need to remove. There's one here, one here, one right here and then over here on the passenger's side there's one more, right here. In order to remove the rubber exhaust hangers, we're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant and a large pry bar. Now with the rubber exhaust hangers removed, we'll go ahead and use our safety strap to lower the exhaust down some. Next we're going to need to remove the tow hook that's located over on the driver's side.

To remove the tow hook, we'll need to take out four bolts. There's one here, one here, here, and here. Next let's go ahead and point out our mounting locations that we'll be using to install our hitch. Now there will be a total of five mounting locations, three over here on the driver's side and two on the passenger's side with one here, here, and right here. Now we'll move over to the passenger's side, the locations are here and here. Now before you try and install your hitch, it's a good idea to take a little bit of spray lubricant and a nylon tube brush to clean out each of the threads on the existing weld nuts. The nylon tube brush we'll be using is part number 814092. You want to go ahead and repeat this same process at all five mounting locations.

It's a good idea once you've clean out the threads to make sure that the bolt threads in easily. Next let's go over the hardware that we'll be using to secure our hitch to the vehicle. For the two rear mounting locations on the driver's side as well as both mounting locations on the passenger's side, we'll be using a twelve millimeter bolt and a half inch conical tooth washer making sure that the teeth on the washer face toward the hitch when installed. Now for the forward mounting location right here in on the driver's side we will be reusing one of the four bolts that we removed taking the tow hook off. Now it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. With the hitch raised up into position, we'll go ahead and install our hardware loosely.

Followed by making sure that the hitch is centered on the vehicle. Once we know the hitch is centered, we can go ahead and tighten down the hardware and torque it to the manufacturer's specification. Now that we have our hitch torqued down, we can go ahead and raise our exhaust back up into position and re-install the four rubber exhaust hangers. Now a quick tech 00:04:57 tip, the passenger's side rubber exhaust hanger, now we took it off this hanger here when we removed it but it will help if you take it off the hanger that stayed on the body like this and then re-install it on to the muffler first, then you can swing it up and onto the inaudible 00:05:23 just like that. It will go on much easier that way. We'll then go ahead and continue putting the rest of our exhaust hangers back on. With our rubber exhaust hangers back up into position we can go ahead and remove our safety strap and that will do it for the installation of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 13577 on our 2014 Nissan Murano. .
