How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2014 Toyota RAV4

Today on our 2014 Toyota Rav 4, we're going to be taking a look at, and installing the Draw-Tite Maxframe class 3 trailer hitch receiver. Part number 75235. Here's what this hitch is going to look like once it's installed on the vehicle. As you can see, it's nice and tight, up to the underside of the vehicle, here, but you've also got plenty of room to work here on the sides. It should be easy to attach any accessories that you may use. It has a 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening, with nice enforcement collar around it. It's welded on to help make sure that it's nice and strong here.

Then it's got the standard 5/8 inch hitch pin hole, that's going to be used to secure all your class 3 accessories. Then is also has the smaller 1/2 inch hole, which is going to be used for a J-pin stabilization system, which is going to eliminate some of that shake and play from inside the receiver tube. It's got the flat plate style safety chain connection points, with nice large holes that will make it easy for attaching just about any type a safety chain connection you may have. It's got this welded on bracket that's good to mount up any wiring with the pre-drilled holes that are in it. That if, you want to keep your wiring outside the vehicle, that's a perfect place to mount it. It's a nice, easy, straight-forward installation that uses existing weld nuts in the frame. What I like most about this hitch, is the great accessibility that you have to be able to attach any accessories, and also how tight it stays up here, so it should give you plenty of functionality.

This hitch features a 675 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the weight of any accessories, and the down force, here in the receiver tube opening. It features a 4,500 pound gross trailer weight rating, which is going to be the weight of the trailer, and then anything that you may have on it. this hitch is rated for use with weight distribution, but the weight ratings are going to stay the same. Now, I'll give you some measurements to help assist you with your selection of hitch mounted accessories, such as ball mounts, bike racks, or cargo carriers. The distance from the center of the hitch pin holds to the outer most part of the rear bumper, is 2 1/2 inches. The distance from the top inside edge of the received tube opening to the ground, is 12 1/2 inches. Now, let's show you how to install this hitch.

First we'll need to do to begin our installation, is, we'll need to remove this tow hook over here on the driver's side. That's going to be held in with two bolts that have a 17 millimeter head. Now I'll take a support strap and hang it up, so that when we loosen our exhaust hangers, our exhaust won't just fall down. Back here at the muffler, taking a little bit spray lubricant, spray it around the hanger here. You can take a pry bar, and use it to pry it right off of that post there. That should give us a enough room, that we'll be able to get up to our mounting locations.

These holes, because they've exposed to the elements for a little while, we're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant, and a tube brush to help clean them out. If you need a tube brush, you can get that on our site, part number 814092. Keep in mind, there will be three weld nuts. It will be our attachment points. On the driver's side, and two weld nuts on the passenger side. It's a good idea to get a second set of hands. You want to feed it up, over the exhaust first, then get it up in position, get the holes lined up. Over here on this driver's side, you'll want to put the front most bolt in first in order to hold it up there. That will help hold the hitch up enough, so when I put the rest of my hardware in, here on these other two, I can replace my tow hook. You want to be sure when you put your 12 millimeter bolts and conical tooth washers on, that you have the teeth facing up towards the hitch on those washers. Once we've got all of our hardware started, you'll want to make sure that your hitch is centered. Then grab a 3/4 inch socket, and begin tightening. You'll want to be sure to take a torque wrench and go back to all of your attachment points, and torque them down to the specification listed in the instructions. Now, we'll reinstall our exhaust into the rubber isolator, and remove our support strap. That's going to complete our look at, and installation of the Draw-Tite, Maxframe class 3 trailer hitch receiver. Part number 75235, on our 2014 Toyota Rav 4.

I checked with Draw-Tite and the Hitch # 75235 will fit all models of the 2014 Toyota RAV4. You can use this to transport your bikes with a bike rack. If you don't already have a bike rack then I'm attaching a link to our selection of hitch mount bike racks that you can check out.

What do I Think? I think no one wants to talk about installing a hitch on an 2014 "ALL ELECTRIC" RAV 4. Anyone care to speak up?
