How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2015 Ram 1500

Today on our 2015 Ram 1500 we'll be installing the Draw Tite Ultra Frame Class 5 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 41948. We have a large diameter frame that goes across, very strong and very structural. You can see our 5/8 inch diameter hitch pin hole is reinforced on the outside edge on both sides of our receiver. One nice thing about this hitch, even though it's a Class 5 hitch and a very substantial hitch, it still tucks in behind our bumper here of our vehicle, so when we're loading the bed of our truck, we don't have to worry about running our shins or knees into the receiver on the hitch. This Class 5 hitch has a 1,500 pound max gross tongue weight rating and a 12,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating. If you step up to weight distribution, you're max tongue weight stays the same at 1,500 pounds but your max gross trailer weight rating increases to 15,000 pounds. You'll want to consult with the owner's manual of your Ram 1500 first before you tow at that limit.

You don't want to cause any damage to your truck or exceed the limits of the hitch. We have a nice gloss black powder coat finish on our receiver and the hitch itself. It will give us many years of rust and corrosion free service. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessories such a ball mount or a bike rack, or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 4 inches from the center of the 5/8 inch diameter hitch pin hole to the rear most part of the back bumper and about 20 1/2 inches from the ground to the top of the 2 inch Class 5 receiver opening. Now that we've gone over some of our features, we'll show you how to install it. We've gone ahead and removed our spare tire so to ease our installation.

There's 2, 21 millimeter bolts on both sides of our factory bumper brace here. We need to go ahead and remove these. Now, above our exhaust hanger on both sides of the frame there's an access hole. We've taken one of our fish wires, do what we're calling a fish wire, or be doing what we call a reverse fish wire technique, put one of our spacer plates on, one of our carriage bolts, place the carriage bolts into the frame, followed by the spacer plate, and pull the bolt on down. Do the same on the other side.

Now on the front of the hitch, towards the front of the truck, you notice there's 2 holes. The one at the very end here is for long bed pickups and the one here is for short bed pickups. Our particular truck we have here today is a short bed. This is where we're putting our washer on, on the top side of it and just loosely taping it in place so it doesn't fall off when we raise the hitch up. Do the same on the other side. Now, the bolts that we put in the frame of the vehicle, when we raise our hitch up, will have our conical tooth washer with the teeth facing towards the hitch and then our nut.

All right, now with the help of an assistant we'll raise our hitch up into position. Okay we've installed with a few turns, we're good. We can reinstall our factory bolts now at this time. We'll repeat the same process on the other side. We'll snug down our factory bolts at this time. Repeat the process on the other side and we'll tighten down the nuts for the bolts that we installed in the frame, repeating the process on the other side. Now, we'll fish wire our hardware in through the bumper bar. Stick the fish wire in the hole and push it out the other side until it comes out the bumper support, right here. We'll install our spacer plate and we'll thread on our carriage bolt. We'll pull our hardware on through the bumper. Now, we'll remove our fish wire, making sure out bolt doesn't fall back into the bumper. Install our conical tooth washer, with the teeth facing towards the hitch. Install our nut. We'll repeat the same process for this other bolt right here. We'll snug these bolts down now. Now, we'll tork all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. Okay, with all of our hardware now torqued down to specification we can reinstall our spare tire at this time and we're ready to hit the road. That completes our installation of the Draw Tite Ultra Frame Class 5 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 41948 on our 2015 Ram 1500.
