How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Acura MDX

Today on our 2016 Acura MDX we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the draw tight max frame custom fit trailer hitch receiver. This is a class 3 hitch offering the 2 inch x 2 inch opening. It's part number is 75225. Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on the MDX. As you can see, it's going to have a really nice clean look. inaudible 00:00:22 we've got are our safety chain connection points where they hang down, a receiver tube opening and the bracket right here hid off to the side there for mounting wiring to, if you wanted to.

It's pre-drilled with 3 holes. You're going to have a reinforcement inaudible 00:00:37 around the end of the hitch. It's got a rounded edge to it, so it gives it a nice soft look, 2 inch x 2 inch receiver tube opening. The end of that opening is going to be just behind the bumper, just under the bumper. That's going to allow us for good negotiating around here.

We shouldn't have to worry about running into it or anything like that. Safety chain connection points themselves are nice and open, should be an easy thing to get connected to. Then you can see our pinhole set up here. The larger hole, that's going to be the one that we connect all of our items with. This is going to be a 5/8 diameter hole. As you can see, more than enough room on each side whether you're using a pin and a clip, a locking hitch pin, anti-rattle device, whatever you decide there.

Now the second pinhole here, that's for an anti-rattle device. It's called the J-pin stabilization system. If you'd like you can use that in conjunction with several items and keep them nice and secure. Now for tongue weight, we're going to have a 900 pound tongue weight rating. It's going to be the maximum downward force we can put here at the receiver tube opening.

We're also going to have a 6,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we load up on it. If we go into a weight distribution set up, tongue weight is going to stay at 900 while the gross trailer weight rating will then go up to 8,000. Of course, we do need to look at the manual on the MDX, see what it's rated for, and we'll go off of whichever those numbers are the lowest. Now a couple of measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting your ball mount bike rack or hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening. We've got about 14 1/2 inches. Then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outer most edge of our bumper, it's about 2 1/2. To begin our installation we'll want to lower our spare tire, if it's equipped with one. We don't need to remove it completely. We just need to get it down out of the way enough to give us some room to work. Now we can take a look at our attachment points. These are going to be the exact same on each side. We're going to have 3 weld nuts that are in the frame here already. We've got one. We've got 2. Then tucked up underneath the bumper all the way there at the back it's going to be our third. Now what we'll do is use a little bit of spray lubricant in those weld nuts. Then we're also going to use a nylon tube brush just to clean them out. This is 814092, if you don't have one at the house there. We want to make sure our threads are clear, so our bolts thread in nicely for us. We're going to go do the exact same thing over on the passenger side. Here's our provided hardware. We're going to have 6 bolts, 6 conical tooth washers. The key is we want to make sure that those washers face up towards the hitch. Our bolts will go through our hitch, and then we just thread it into those weld nuts that you can see there. We'll do that in all 6 locations, hardware is the same for each one. Now we're ready to get our hitch raised into position. The main tube we tuck up behind the inaudible 00:03:38. Our weld nuts will line up here. Get one bolt started on this side really well. We'll go over to the driver's side and do the same thing. Now we'll let our hitch rest there while we get the other 4 fasteners in. We'll take a quick look just to be sure we've got our hitch centered with our vehicle. Then we'll snug down our fasteners. Now we're ready to look in the instructions and find our torque specifications. Then we're going to go around and torque down all 6 bolts. Now we're ready to get our spare put back into place here. As we do it, you may need to lift up on the backside of the tire. That way it will nestle up behind the hitch there. With our spare back in place that's going to complete our installation of the draw tight max frame custom trailer hitch receiver, part number 75225 on our 2016 Acura MDX.
