How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Chevrolet Express Van

Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Express van, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the CURT Custom Fit Class 4 Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers a 2" x 2" opening. It's part number is 14090. Here's what our hitch is going to look like installed. You'll see we've got the square tube that's going to come all the way across the rear. Here in the middle, our 2" x 2" receiver tube opening. We've got a flush reinforcement collar around the end of it there as you can see, gives it a nice clean look.

5/8" diameter pin hole here on the side. We'll want to use Class 4-rated accessories. That's the hole we'll use to secure all of our items. There's going to be plenty of room on each side here for anti-rail devices, hitch pins and clips and things like that, so you can pick your pleasure in that department. Safety chain connection points are going to be a plate style here on the bottom. There's plenty of room to get those chains connected and keep everything safe in case of a disconnect. When it comes to weight ratings, the hitch offers a 1,000-pound tongue weight rating. That's the maximum downward force we can put here at our receiver tube opening.

It has a 10,000-pound gross trailer weight rating. That's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we load up on it. If you move into a weight distribution set up, tongue weight rating is going to go 1,200, and the gross trailer weight rating, that's going to go to 12,000. Of course, we do want to check the owner's manual on the Express and see what it's rated for. Then we can go off of whichever those numbers are the lowest. A couple measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting our ball mount, bike rack, or cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening; we've got about 16-1/2".

From the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about 3-3/4". We're going to have 3 attachment points for our hitch on each side of the van in the frame rail. You can see we've got 2 holes located right here at the rear. Each of them's going to get a 1/2" carriage bolt with spacer block; just drop right down through the top. Then we'll keep going forward, and we'll see 2 holes pretty close together there. For our rear location, we're going to use that forward hole of the 2 with the same 1/2" carriage bolt and spacer block. With an extra set of hands, we're ready to get our hitch raised up into position.

You'll see we just guided over our hardware, then we want to thread on our 1/2" flange nut. Once we've got one hand-tight, we're good to let our hitch rest and get one started on the other side. We can let it hang there while we get our other 4 flange nuts in place. Let's take a quick look to be sure we have our hitch centered with our vehicle here, and we can snug down those fasteners using a 19-millimeter socket. If we look in our instructions, we're going to find the torque specifications. We'll want to use our torque wrench and torque everything down properly. That's going to complete our installation of the CURT Custom Fit Class 4 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 14090, on our 2016 Chevrolet Express Van.
