How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Ford Transit T250

Today on our 2016 Ford Transit T-250, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Curt Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. It's part number is C13193. Here's what our Curt hitch is going to look like installed. You'll see that flushed reinforcement cal 00:00:20 around the ends, kind of in set from the back of the bumper, so it's kind of conveniently tucked away, up underneath the back of the transit, but there when we need it. This is a class III hitch, so it's going to be very versatile. It's going to work out for, of course, cargo carriers, bike racks, things like that, but inaudible 00:00:35 back of the transit probably towing needs are going to be more important to you.

It's going to work out with all class III rated ball mounts. See a 5/8 diameter pin hole here. That's what we're going to use to secure it. You want to choose a class III accessory, and then plate style safety chain connection points. The holes are pretty good size.

They're kind of rectangular shape, so whatever size safety chains you have they should connect there without any kind of a problem. Now the hitch is going to offer a 900 pound ton weight rating, so that's the maximum downward force we can put here, the receiver tube opening. It gives us a 6000 pound gross trailer weight rating. It's going to be the total weight of your trailer and anything that you load up on it. Now the hitch is also rated for use with weight distribution. The ton weight's going to stay the same at 900 pounds; the gross trailer weight rating it's going to go up to 8000 pounds.

Of course, you want to check your owner's manual. You'll want to see what the tow rating is on the transit, and use which ever of those numbers is the lowest. Now a couple measurements that will be helpful when it's time to select your ball mount bike rack or hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening. We're going to have about 14.5 inches. Then from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper. It's about 4.5. To begin our installation we're going to come around the underside of the bumper.

This is the driver side. We've got our bumper supports here. There are going to be two holes in each frame rail there, or in each support there. We'll take the self tapping screws, you want to place those up in, and then while keeping them even with the frame we want to get these started. Once they're started good, you'll just run them on through. It's going to create the threads we need to install our hitch. Now once those threads are well established, we just want to pull our bolt back out. We need to repeat that for the three other holes. Now these are going to take care of our four rear rooted attachment points, two on each side. We've got one more attachment point a little bit closer to the front of the vehicle, and that's going to be just the open hole here. We're going to take our bolt and spacer block, and we want to place that in so that it comes down and through. We'll do that on both sides. Now we can get our hitch lifted up into position. Want to be sure that that carriage bolt comes through the rear there. We'll take one of our bolts and get it threaded into our hole there. Once we get a couple good turns on that, just going to let our hitch rest there, and we can get our flange nut installed on our carriage bolt in the back, and we'll head over to the other side, get it started. Now we'll take a quick look. We just want to make sure we've got our hitch centered, and we'll start tightening down our fasteners. Now it's time to go through and get each front fastener's torque down to the specifications which are listed in the instruction. With everything torqued down properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Curt Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13193, on our 2016 Ford Transit T-250.
