How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Nissan Murano

Today on our 2016 Nissan Murano we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the CURT Custom Fit Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver. Offering the 2" by 2" receiver tube opening, its part number is C13205. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like installed on the vehicle. You'll see our crosstube. It's going to come over from the frame to the frame. Meets here in the middle at the receiver tube opening. This is a Class 3 hitch, so it's got the 2" by 2" receiver tube opening.

That's going to make it very, very adaptable. Any accessory that they make for hitches probably comes in a Class 3 variety. You'll see the reinforcement collar around the end here. Nice flush look to it. Our safety chain connection points are going to come in a plate style with an oval-shaped hole.

Any trailer that you'll be pulling with your Murano, you're likely to have safety chains that are going to fit that. Now to secure any item you'll be putting in your hitch, we've got a 5/8 diameter pin hole here. It's going to work out really well with most Class 3 accessories. You'll see there's plenty of room around it for washers and things like that. If you're using an anti-rattle device, locking hitch pin, or a pin and clip, will work just fine. Now the hitch is going to give you a 350 pound tongue weight rating. That will be the maximum downward force that we can put here at the receiver tube opening.

It gives us a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That would be the total weight of your trailer and anything that you we're to load up on it. Now it is recommended to check the owner's manual on the Murano as well just to see what its tow ratings are. You'll want to go off of whichever of those are the lowest. CURT also reommends the use of a stabilization strap when you're hauling non-wheeled loads, so your things like cargo carriers and bike racks. All right now, a few measurements that will be helpful when it comes to selecting ball mounts, bike racks, and cargo carriers will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening we're going to have about 12-3/4". You might want to choose accessories with a raised shank to help promote better ground clearance at the rear.

Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's going to be about 5-1/2". Now to begin the installation process, it's going to be really simple. We don't have to remove anything except for tow hooks if they're hanging down here. Get to remove those. We can take a look at our attachment points. Now on our driver side we've got three attachment points. We'll have one here, one located here. We're going to skip the second from the back of the vehicle. Our third one's going to be here. Now on the passenger side we're just going to have two. We've got one located right here and one located right here. You'll want to clean those out, use a little bit of a spray lubricant and a nylon tube brush. That's 814092 if you don't have one of these. Just clean it out. That way our bolts will thread in nice and easy. You can see we're going to use short little M12 bolts, conical tooth washers with the teeth facing upward. Want to guide it so we're aligning the holes in the hitch with the weld nuts we've cleaned out. We'll get one of our bolts started on each side. Then we can just let it rest there while we get the other two on this side and the one on the passenger side started. Now we'll just take a quick look to be sure we've got our hitch centered on the vehicle. We'll go through and tighten down all five fasteners. Then we can torque them to the specifications listed in our instructions. With everything torqued down properly, that's going to complete our installation of the CURT Custom Fit Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number C13205, on our 2016 Nissan Murano.
