How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Toyota RAV4

Today on our 2016 Toyota Rav-4 we're going to be taking a look at and then showing how to install the Draw-Tite Max Frame Custom Fit Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the 2 inch by 2 inch opening. It's part number is 75235. Here is what our hitch looks like installed. As you can see we've got our main cross tube that is going to come through here across the back. It comes out by our 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening. We got reinforcement collar around the end there.

It's kind of got a rounded edge to it. You see the end of that is going to be tucked in behind the outer edge of our bumper there. So we shouldn't have any issues with bumping into it or anything like that. You're going to have two holes on the side of the receiver tube opening. The larger one is the one we are going to use to secure all of our items with. It's going to be 5/8 of an inch in diameter.

And it looks like there is plenty of space on each side for whatever hitch pin, hitch lock, or anti-rail device that you might pick. The hole in the front is a stabilization device called the j-pin . Our safety chain connection points are gonna be a plate style that are going to come around. They have a good large open hole to them, so you shouldn't have any problem getting safety chains or straps connected there. Small tab welded on the cross tube here is going to allow for wiring attachment if you decide to go that route. We have three pre-drilled holes there to help mount brackets to, if you decide. Now, as far as tongue weight goes, we have a 675 pound tongue weight rating. We have some maximum downward force that we can put here in that receiver tube opening. We got a 4500 pound gross trailer weight rating.

It's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything we load up on it. Of course we want to check out the owner's manual on the Rav-4 and we want to see what it's rated for and then we can go off of whichever of those numbers is the lowest. Now the few measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of a receiver tube opening. We got about 13 inches. Then from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of our bumper, it's about 3. Now, to begin our installation here in the rear driver's corner. We are going to need to remove this plastic panel.

We are not going to be reusing it so this can go back in the vehicle or if you ever take your hitch off you can put it back in place. You got the two push pin fasteners here in the backside. You pull the center out and then the rest of it should come out for you. And then, a little bit closer to the front, directly up here, there is going to be a little 10 millimeter plastic nut that you just want to un-thread that. Now we are going to remove the two bolts that are holding the tow hook or the tie down hook in place. Now, over here on the passenger side where our exhaust comes out, we want to remove the hanger right above the larger tube. A little spray lubricant and then a pry bar on the backside, it will usually pop off there pretty well for you. That'll give us enough room to bring our exhaust down some. We need to remove the two bolts right here that are holding on here that are holding exhaust strap. They require a 12 millimeter socket. Now the exhaust rod and the two bolts, you can set aside you will not be using these. On the driver's side you'll see our three attachment points. We have a weld point here, here, and here. Use a little bit of spray lubricant and a nylon tube brush, this is part number 814092. We get in there and make sure those threads are nice and clean. Here on our passenger side we've got two attachment points. We've got the weld nut located her and the one here. We're going to be skipping the one in the middle. We are going to raise our hitch into position and align it with our weld nuts in the frame. Here you'll see our M-12 bolts we are going to place a conical tooth washer on those. We want the teeth of the washer to face up towards our hitch. Then we just want to thread that rear one in. Once we have four or five turns on it we can go over to our passenger side and get one started there. Those will kind of hold our hitch in position. You get our other bolt on the passenger side started. Then we can go over to the driver side. Now as we start these we want to be sure we go through our tie down bracket, then through our hitch and make sure we get those threaded in. Now we can take a quick look and make sure we have our hitch centered. Then we can smack down our hardware and get it twerked to specification. All right, now we can raise our exhaust back into position. We use a little more spray lubricant there. And that hanger should just slide right on for you. All right, at that point our hitch is ready for use. That is going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Max Frame Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part 75235, on our 2016 Toyota Rav-4.
