How to Install the Curt Trailer Hitch on a 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler Unlimited

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Curt custom fit class 3 trailer hitch receiver. This offers the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. Its part number is C13392. Now, here's what your hitch is going to look like installed on your Jeep. As you can see, it gives us a very factory or kind of an OE appearance. This is a class 3 hitch, so it will have a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening.

That's going to make this a very versatile hitch. It's going to work with just about any type of hitch accessory that's probably available in a class 3 variety.Now, to secure your items in place, you'll see we've got our five eighths diameter pinhole here on this side. You want to choose class 3 rated accessories, but there's plenty of room, so whether you want to use a locking hitch pin, just a standard hitch pin, or even an anti-rattle device, shouldn't have any issue at all getting those connected.Can see here we've got our plate style safety chain connection point. Nice, round hole there, so whatever size chain you're going to be using, shouldn't have any issue getting those connected. But one thing we've noticed, the hitch material, it's a little bit thicker and a little bit beefier than what you get with the factory hitch option.Now, as far as weight capacities go for the hitch, it offers a 350 pound tongue weight rating, so that's the maximum downward force we can put here at the receiver tube opening.

And it gives us a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. So, that's the total weight of your trailer, then anything you might load up on it. It is also rated for use with weight distribution. In the weight distribution setup, the tongue weight rating goes up to 400 pounds. The gross trailer weight rating is going to go up to 4,000 pounds, but definitely consult the owner's manual.

Make sure that your vehicle's rated for that amount. If not, use whichever number's the lowest.Now, a few measurements that you'll find helpful in selecting your ball mount, bike rack, or hitch cargo carrier, be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, we've got about 19 and a quarter inches. Then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about two and a half.Now, you see our hitch, it's going to use four attachment points right up here on the top. They pass all the way through both plates. We've got long bolts to pass through.

This is going to fit around our bumper. We can take a look here at the attachment point. Can see we've got one here, here, here, and here, and these are just pass through. So, we'll place our hitch up around the bumper and pass the bolts through with the flat washer on the backside. And we'll work our way across, get all four bolts started.Now, on the outside of each new bolt, back here towards the bumper, we're going to place on a flange nut. And of course, you'll want that flange facing in towards the hitch. Now we're going to go through with our three quarter inch wrench and socket, get our bolts tightened down and twerked to the specifications, which are listed in your instructions. That's going to complete our installation of the Curt custom fit class 3 trailer hitch receiver, part number C13392 on our 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited.

In the video when the installer holds up the new hitch up to the frame, the frame appears to have had something removed from the frame where the hitch is to be mounted, is that correct ? Does something have to be removed in order to install the hitch ? Does the muffler have to be lowered ?

To have more room during installation some installers will lower the exhaust with this hitch. It is recommended in the installation instructions. This installer was able to torque the hitch to its proper specifications without lowering the exhaust. The hitch lines right up with the holes in the bumper beam, there is nothing removed from the frame.
