How to Install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch on a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Speaker 1: Today on this 2018 Subaru Crosstrek we'll be having a look at, and showing you how to install, the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number: 76209. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. One thing you'll notice about our hitch, it's tucked up nice and tight against our back bumper here, giving us optimal ground clearance and still maintaining good looks. One thing you'll notice about this hitch too, is that we have two pin holes. The larger one is our industry standard 5/8" diameter hitch pin hole for your pin and clips to secure your hitch-mounted accessories. You can pick up one of those on our website, it's part number: PC3.

The smaller one here is part of a J-pin stabilization device hole. And what that does is, a J-pin stabilization device will take away the annoying shake, play, and rattle out of what is inserted in your receiver.Welded on the bottom of our receiver and the frame of the hitch, is our safety chain plate. These plates have a large opening, which will easily accept most safety chains, if not all on the market. Welded on the end of our receiver is this nice collar to help reinforce our opening, and give us a nice finished look. One unique feature that this hitch has, that others on the market don't, so we have this tab welded onto our hitch, which serves as an attachment point for any wiring options that we may want for our vehicle, for our trailer lighting systems, such as your 4-pole round, your 4-pole flat, your 6-way round, or your 7-way RV.

We have multiple wiring options available for you on your website, and brackets to attach them to this point. This hitch features a 675 pound tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 4,500 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it's rated to pull. You want to make sure you consult with the owner's manual of your Crosstrek and not exceed what the vehicle was rated for. Go by whichever number is less. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch-mounted accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 15" from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, and about 2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rearmost part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed.

To begin our install, we need to lower our exhaust. Now, there's a couple different ways we can do this. The way that I'm gonna do this is, I'm going to remove our muffler entirely by removing these two 14mm bolts that have nuts on the back side, and then removing our three exhaust hangers. We have two on the driver's side, and one on the passenger side. Alternatively, you can leave the muffler attached to your exhaust pipe and just lower down the exhaust to have room.

But I found it's easier to remove the muffler in its entirety to give you more room. We'll use a 14mm wrench to hold the bolt still while we remove the nut with a socket. We'll apply some spray lubricant to our hangers so they slide off easier. And now, to remove your exhaust hangers, you can use a pry bar and pry against the muffler, and it'll pop off. You can use a pair of channel lock pliers and squeeze it off, or you can use pliers like this and it pops right off. We'll support this side as we get the other two on the driver's side. On each one of our frame rails we will find three rubber plugs. We need to remove the back one and the front one. To do that, just use a flathead screwdriver and pry it out. Now we'll take a pull wire, go through our back hole, it'll come out the front hole. Take our block, put it on the wire, push it inside the frame rail, thread our carriage bolt on, pull it through and out. Remove our pull wire. Take our pull wire, put a block on, thread on our carriage bolt. Carriage bolt goes inside the frame rail, followed by the block. Then pull the bolt through the block and out the hole, and remove our pull wire. We'll do the same process for the other side. We're looking at the top of our hitch right now. This is the front, this is the side towards the back where the receiver is. We need to place a spacer block on the front mounting location where it will get sandwiched between the hitch and the body of the vehicle. Now, to make it easier to put in place, I'm gonna tape it into position so it doesn't fall off when we raise the hitch up. We need to do this on both sides of the hitch. Now with an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch in position and secure it in place with conical tooth washers the teeth will face up towards the hitch and we'll have a nut. Quick tech tip: you may find it easier just to temporarily put just a nut in place on one of the bolts so it'll help hold the hitch in position while you get the washer and the nut on the other bolt. Once you have it in place, you can remove your nut, place your washer on, and then your nut. Now we'll use an 11/16" socket to tighten our hardware. You may need a flex universal joint for the back ones. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. Now with our hitch in place and torqued down, we can reinstall our exhaust. We'll start with the passenger side hanger first, get that one in place, and then we'll do our driver's side hangers. Now we'll reinstall the bolts at our muffler flange. And that completes our look at, and showing you how to install, the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number: 76209, on this 2018 Subaru Crosstrek.
