How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Today on our 2002 Chevy Impala, we'll be installing the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Connector, part number 118512. Now to begin our install we'll first go ahead and open up the trunk, we will be removing the rear threshold. We'll simply get underneath it and pop it up releasing the four fasteners underneath. Next we'll move behind the driver side taillight assembly and remove the three black wing nuts that we can see. Then we can go ahead and pull the carpeting back and there are two more additional fasteners to be removed. We can go ahead move the taillight assembly and pop it out of this position and then remove the wiring connector at the bottom releasing the lacking tab and pulling out separating the two connectors. This will allow us to take the driver side taillight assembly and set it aside.

Next we move over the passenger side where we repeat the same process to remove the taillight assembly. We're ready to start installing the new Tow-Ready Wiring Harness. We'll take the 4-pole flat connector and fit it down between the body and bumper cover here on the driver side. We'll repeat the same process with out green wire connector leaving the yellow wire connector here on the driver side as we reach underneath the vehicle and pull out our 4-pole and green wire connector. Here on the driver side we'll then take the yellow wire connector and plug it directly into the manufacturer's wiring. In the other end we'll plug into back of our taillight assembly.

We'll take the white wire with a preattached ring terminal and secure it to the body of the vehicle. Note, we recommend to find a location where the sheet metal doubles up here behind the driver side taillight assembly is a perfect location. We'll use the self-tapping screw to secure the ring terminal. We'll go ahead and reinstall the driver side taillight assembly. Next we'll move underneath the vehicle, we'll start routing our wiring and take the green wire connector routed to the bumper channel over to the passenger side and then up behind the passenger side taillight assembly. Take the 4-pole wire fitted to the bumper channel towards the center of the vehicle.

For this application, we'll be adding a Tow-Ready No Drill Mounting Bracket, part number 18136 in conjunction with the Tow-Ready 4-Pole Flat Mounting Bracket, part number 18144. We'll go ahead and take the long bracket and secure to the hitch first using a worm gear clamp provided. Then we'll secure the 4-pole flat bracket to the long bracket and then we can take the 4-pole install it onto the 3-pole bracket and install the cap. Then we'll take the remaining wiring from our 4-pole harness and secure it to the top of the hitch using some black zip ties. Once we completed securing the wiring, we'll go head and cut up the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. Now we'll move behind the passenger side taillight assembly, taking the green wire connector and plug it into the manufacturer's wire.

We'll take any excess wiring and secure it to the manufacturer's harness using some black zip ties. Cut the excess from our zip tie and then reinstall the taillight assembly repeating the same process we did on the driver side. Now with both taillight assembly reinstalled we can go ahead and reinstall the rear threshold and we're ready to test our new 4-pole connector. Using our test light on the white wire terminal which will be the bare wire is our ground, then testing the next wire over will be our brown wire for our running light circuit, then the yellow wire will be the left turn left braking signal, and the green wire connector will be the right turn signal right braking. Now we know our new 4-pole connector works we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our Tow Ready 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118512 in conjunction with our Tow Ready No Drill Mounting Bracket, part number 18136 and the 4 Flat Mounting Bracket, part number 18144 for our 2002 Chevy Impala. .
