How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2002 Mazda Tribute

Today on our 2002 Mazda Tribute, we'll be installing the Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118343. We'll go ahead and show you how to use your new 4-Pole Trailer Connector. We'll simply open up the rear cargo door and run it out and down to your hitch or accessory, being careful to stay away from the latch as pinching the wire off in the latch can damage it. However, the weather stripping is thick enough that it won't. We'll close the rear cargo door on the 4-Pole connector and pull out any necessary wire to reach our hitch or accessory. Then, once we're finished using the new 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, we'll simply open up the rear cargo door, roll it up, and store it in the rear storage compartment. To begin our install, we'll go ahead and remove the rear taillights.

To remove the rear taillights, we'll remove the 2 fasteners for each taillight, then we'll set the fasteners aside. Then we'll go ahead and remove the rear taillights. Next, we need to remove the spare tire cover. We'll raise the carpeting and then remove the hold down, and then remove the cover altogether. Next, we'll move back inside the vehicle and remove the rear threshold.

To remove the rear threshold, we need to use a trim panel tool or a flat-bladed screwdriver to get underneath and gently release the fasteners underneath so that we can remove the rear threshold. Here's what your fasteners will look like once you remove the threshold. Now, with the rear threshold set aside, we'll go ahead and pull back on the driver's side interior trim panel. This will allow us to gain access to the manufacturer's wiring that runs out to the taillight assembly. With that done, we can then go ahead and remove the grommet that the manufacturer's wire passes through outside to the taillight assembly. Once removed, we'll go ahead and use a pair of side cutters and cut a slice into the grommet.

Then, we'll take the yellow wire connector from our new Tow Ready Harness, feeding it from the inside out to the taillight assembly, sliding the wire into the slice in the grommet and then making connection with our new yellow T-Connector. We'll be connecting to the driver's side turn signal assembly and to do this we'll remove the connector from the taillight by pulling out on the 2 locking tabs and removing the connector. This will be the center socket, or gray socket, and connector. Then we'll plug in directly in line with the matching connectors for our Tow Ready Harness. Once installed, we'll then go ahead and secure the yellow wire to the manufacturer's wiring using several zip ties provided with our install kit, cutting off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look, and then we'll re-install the grommet, and then the taillight assembly. Next, we'll move over to the passenger's side.

To pull back on the passenger's side interior trim panel, you'll first need to remove the cargo door and then the 2 fasteners underneath the hook and loop straps. Now, we can pull back on the panel. With the panel pulled back, you can see we gain access to the manufacturer's wiring that runs out to the taillight assembly here on the passenger's side. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process of removing the grommet and cutting a slice into it. Then we'll pass the T-connectors from inside the vehicle out behind the taillight assembly. Using the green wire connector, we'll again connect to the gray connector and socket behind the taillight assembly for our turn signal circuit here on the passenger's side and the manufacturer's black wire and socket assembly for our remaining T-Connector. Next, we'll take the white wire with the pre-attached ring terminal. This will be the ground wire for our new Tow Ready Harness. We'll need to secure it to the body of the vehicle. Where the sheet metal doubles up will be a perfect location. We'll go ahead and use a self-tapping screw provided with our install kit. Now, with all our connections made we'll go ahead and secure our wiring and then re-install the grommet and taillight assembly. Next, we'll go ahead and take the black converter box and we'll need to mount it to the body of the vehicle. To mount it, we're looking for a clean, flat surface and here below the driver's side taillight assembly inside will be a perfect location. We'll go ahead and remove the 2-way adhesive and secure it here inside the vehicle. Next, we're going to go ahead and install the 4-Pole wiring into the open cargo compartment here on the passenger's side. To do this, we're going to use a rotary zip tool and cut out a large enough hole to pass the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector through. Then we can go ahead and re-install all interior trim components. That's it. We're ready to hit the road. That will do it for our install of the Tow Ready T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118343, on our 2002 Mazda Tribute. .
