How to Install a Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck Wiring Harness on a 2004 Dodge Ram 3500

Today on this 2004 Dodge 3500, we are going to install the pre-wired fifth wheel trailer connect that mounts in the pickup bed, part number 51-97-411. Start by looking for a spot to install our assembly connector. We are going to mount ours here, just behind the wheel well in the pickup bed. Using a 1/4 inch bit we will make a pilot hole so that we can use our hole saw bit to drill out a 2 inch hole so that we can mount our connector. Now you can leave your drill bit in the hole, go underneath and check to make sure you have enough clearance to fit your 7 way wiring through. Now we will go ahead and drill it out with our 2 inch hole saw bit.

Now we will take our connection end of our new 7 pole wiring, and we are going to feed it through our 2 inch hole. Now we can go ahead and mount our connector. We will use the self tapping screws provided in the install kit. With our 7 pole mounted in the pickup bed, we are now going to go underneath, route our wiring, and make our connections. Now underneath we can go ahead and route our wiring. I am going to feed it up and over the frame, and then run down the frame to the rear bumper.

We will feed it up over the hitch tube, and then I will use some zip ties to secure my wiring. We are going to go ahead and use a metal band clamp, part number A0500, to secure our wiring. Wrap it around the wire and attach it here to the bed catch channel. With our clamp installed, I am now going to follow the manufacturers wiring, and zip tie it directly to it. Now I need to disconnect the manufacturers wiring harness from the 7 pole connector at the bumper.

We are going to unlock the red locking tab just like this one on the connector and remove it from the 7 pole connector to the bumper. With the manufacturers connector disconnected we can now go ahead and take our pre-wired 7 pole connector and plug it inline with the manufacturers. So we will plug one end to the manufacturers wiring harness, lock it back into place, and the other end will go into the 7 pole connector into the bumper. But before I make that connection, I am going to take some black electrical tape and just tape up the rest of my wiring. With that taped up we will go ahead and make that connection, and then we will use the black duct ties to secure the remaining part of our wiring.

With all of my zip ties installed, I am just going to go back through with a pair of wire cutters, and cut off the extra. And there you have it for our new 7 pole pre-wired fifth wheel-gooseneck pickup bed mounted 7 pole connector by Bargman, part number 51-97-411, on a 2004 Dodge 3500.
