How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today on our 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 Series Quad Cab we're going to be installing the Hopkins Endurance Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness with a seven-pull plug. Part number HM42137. To being with, we're going to need to choose a location in our bed to mount our seven-way plug. Now we've already gone ahead and checked underneath the bed to see where we drill our hole to make sure that there's nothing behind it that could be damaged. Now, with this being a short bed and it having a bed liner, we will need to do some extra trimming on the bed liner to allow our seven-way plug to fit against the metal. We'll go ahead and first use our hold saw to drill our hole for the plug itself. Next we're going to need to trim some of the extra bed liner away. Go ahead and put our thing up in there, make a couple marks.

Next we're going to go ahead and take the end of our wiring harness. It has the round plug on it. We're going to reach up underneath the vehicle in between the edge of the bed and feed our wiring through the hole that we just drilled. Next we're going to go ahead and take some of the terminal grease that comes with the kit. Go ahead and apply it here to our connector.

We can then take our seven-way plug and line up this locking tab here, the tab here on the plug. Go ahead and push it together until we hear it click into position. We'll then feed our excess wire back through the hole. That should secure our plug. We'll be using the self tapping screws with the flat washer. There's one on each corner that we'll be drilling in place.

Next we'll go ahead and take the other end of our wiring here up underneath the vehicle. We're going to need to work that wiring and route over towards the center here at the rear. Next we're going to need to take the white wire with the ring terminal on it. It's right here. We're going to need to attach it the vehicle's frame.

We're going to do that using a self tapping screw. We'll then take any excess wiring and secure it using a few zip ties. Next we're going to need to remove the factory connection here on the backside of the factory seven-way plug. Now there is a little red locking tab on top of this plug that you will need to unlock before you can remove it. Now here's what the tab looks like or the plug looks like. This is the red locking tab that you have to unlock. This little button right here, you have to push down as you're pulling outward. Now if the plug has been on for a long time, it may be a little difficult to get off. That's why I used a small flat-head screwdriver just to help it along a little bit. Before we put our connections together, we're going to again add a little bit of terminal grease that comes with the kit. We'll then go ahead and take the one end of our new wiring harness, connect it to the factory end, push it together to where we get everything to lock into place. Once that's done, you'll take the red locking tab, push that over so that it's secure. I'm going to push it together until you hear it click, so you know it's nice and secure. The locking tab is in place. Then take the red locking tab and push that back over. We'll go ahead and add a little more terminal grease here to this half of our new wiring harness. We'll then take this half and plug it into the backside of the factory seven-way plug. With our plug in place, we can go ahead and push the locking tab over. We'll then use a few zip ties to secure up an excess wiring. Now we can go ahead and trim off any excess zip tie. That will do it for the installation of the Hopkins Endurance Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness with a seven-pull plug. Part number HM42137 on our 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 Quad Cab. .
