How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2006 Acura TL

Today on our 2006 Acura TL, well be installing the Tow Ready T-One Connector, part number 118489. First well need to open up the rear cargo door. Then well be removing the rear threshold. To remove the rear threshold, well go ahead and clip open the spare tire access door, and then using a trim tool or flat-blade screwdriver, get underneath the threshold, and pull up popping it free from its fasteners. If the fasteners happen to come dislodge from the threshold, we can simply remove them and reinstall it. Now well go ahead and set that aside for reinstallation later.

Next well need to remove the multiple fasteners to secure the carpeting behind both taillight assemblies. Once we remove them, well be able to pull the carpet back to gain access to the wiring that runs to both rear taillights. As you can see here on the driver side, there are two plugs that go into the rear taillight assembly. Well remove the top smaller plug and the larger bottom plug. Then we can take our new Tow Ready harness.

The red and brown wire connector which will match up the larger bottom plug, plug in line with the manufacturers wiring, and then the yellow wire connector and plug in with this smaller upper manufacturers wiring connector. Then well take the other end of our Tow Ready harness and plug back into the taillight assembly. Next well take our converter box as pre-attached to adhesive and well need to secure this to a clean, flat surface thats out of the way. Just above the vent in the corner behind the carpeting is a perfect location and attach our converter box directly to the sheet metal. Next well take the white wire from our converter box with the pre-attached ring terminal.

Its the ground wire to our converter box and attach it to the body of sheet metal of the vehicle. Here behind the carpeting and taillight assembly where the sheet metal doubles up is a perfect location. Using a self-tapping screw, well go ahead and make this connection now. Next well take our green wire and four-pole connector routing them out from behind the carpeting. Our four-pole connector will get stored next to the spare tire and the spare tire well, and our green wire will run over to the passenger side making identical connections as we did on the driver side with the yellow wire connector.

Now with all our connections made, Id go ahead and take a black zip tie and secure the green wire to the manufacturers wiring. Clean up our install look and well go ahead and cut out the excess from the zip tie. Now were ready to go ahead and reinstall the interior trim components. And with everything reinstalled, now we can go ahead and show you how to use your new four-pole connector. Well simply take it out of the spare tire well and run it out and down to the hitch or accessory. Be careful, stay away from the latch as pinching the wire up in the latch can damage the wire. However, the weather stripping is thick enough that we can go ahead and close the rear cargo door on the wire. Then once were finished using our new four-pole connector, well roll it up and store it down with the spare tire. And there you have it for the Tow Ready T-One Connector, part number 118489 on our 2006 Acura TL.
