How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2008 Toyota Tundra

Today, on this 2008 Toyota Tundra were going to install part #: HM11143395 from Hopkins. This Hopkins tow package wiring kit for Toyota Tundra. To help us install this kit were also going to use part #: 18140 from Tow Ready. This is their universal mounting bracket. Well start off that part first. Well go ahead and take it and attach it to the top of the hitch and then clamp it in place.

Were going to leave this at a slight angle, pointing down just a little bit. Well have to make some adjustments later, so well just clamp it down just tight enough to hold it in place. No were going to go ahead and take the bracket which comes with the tow package wiring kit and attach it to our universal bracket. Well use the hardware that comes with the mounting bracket from Tow Ready. Almost we have it in place.

We can go ahead and add our seven pole connector. When we put it in place near the back edge of the connector well hit up against the hitch. So all we need to do is just bend the bracket out just a little bit to give us some working room. After a couple of tests that it works, the seven pole connector, well go ahead and install the connector with the provided hardware. Once we have all our hardware installed well go ahead and tighten it down for good.

Next well go ahead and loosen up our bracket that goes directly to our hitch. Well go ahead and adjust the seven pole connector to earth in a level position. Then well go ahead and tighten down the clamp for good. Now well go ahead and take the other end of the connector and run it to the original tow package port. When we plug the two parts together you want to make sure that they push together firm enough and you can hear them click.

Since this vehicle did not have the full tow package for a hot lead and a brake lead the other half of the connector will not be used. Well simply tape up the end and secure it out of the way. Then well go ahead and zip tie our wires to make sure theyre safe and secure and out of the way. In this case we zip tie the wires to the existing wiring thats close to the license plate light. With everything installed its a good idea to try it out with a test light before you try it out on a trailer. Well go ahead and take our tester and ground it to the white wire or what should be the bare lead. Next one up will be our rain light circuit and it typically goes to a brown wire. Then well go ahead and check our left turn signal which usually goes to a yellow wire and at the very top will be our right turn signal which is typically a green wire. Then well go ahead and check for a brake signal. Thatll be a solid signal from the green and yellow wires. With that, thatll finish it for our install of the Hopkins tow package wiring kit part #: HM11143395 for 2008 Toyota Tundra. .
