How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2009 Subaru Outback

Today on a 2009 Subaru Outback we're going to be installing the Tow Ready T1 connector, product number 118461. First we're going to access the rear cargo area. Then we're going to remove the interior trim panels to gain access to the plug necessary to plug in our new Tow Ready connector. You need to get underneath the plastic tabs and pop them free also. Alright, we need to gain access to the wiring which is located behind the driver's side tail light. To do this, I'm going to go ahead and remove the rear threshold and then pop the driver's side trim panel loose.

Alright, there are a couple of fasteners that we'll need to remove before we can free up the driver's side trim panel. We've got the cargo hook on the top and the bottom. With our panel back we can see the white plug with the blue tape around it. It's going to be the plug that is necessary to plug our harness into. I'm going to go ahead and cut the blue tape off the plug and then route it underneath the panel so that we can access it.

Now you we can go ahead and put the driver's side trim panel back in place. Our new Tow Ready connector is going to match up with the manufacturers and we'll be able to plug directly into it. Keep in mind, this harness comes with the built in fuse. You may need to access this fuse in the future if your harness quits working. But for now, we're going to go ahead and store it inside the cavity behind the trim panel.

Now we can go ahead and start reinstalling our interior trim panels. We've completed the install of our new harness, let's go ahead and show you how to use it. First we'll open up the cargo door and then we'll lift up the tray compartment where we stored our 4-pole wire connector down with the spare tire. We simply run it out to our hitch, then we can close the door on the wiring harness as the weather seal is thick enough that it won't harm it, however, do stay away from the latch as pinching the latch can damage the wire. And there you have it for our new Tow Ready T1 connector, product number 118461 on our 2009 Subaru Outback..
