How to Install the Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2010 GMC Canyon

Speaker 1: Today in this 2010 GMC Canyon, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 41165. Here's what our wiring harness looks like installed. Now, the reason you're going to want a wiring harness like this one is that this gives you the basic lighting functions the are required by law in order for you to safely and legally tow a trailer. This white wire here provides the necessary ground connection between your Canyon and your trailer. This brown wire here provides the tail light and running light signal. This yellow wire is your left turn signal and left brake light, and this green wire is your right turn signal and right brake light. We have this nice dust cover here that will help better protect our connector when it's not in use, and we can use some of our provided dielectric grease that comes with this to go inside, or if you find that you need more, we do have some available on our website.

This will just better protect it from any moisture, which would cause corrosion and poor electrical performance. With that inside, you can now use the dust cover, wrap it around the safety chain loops on your hitch, secure it in place. This will keep it from dragging on the ground, and be readily accessible for when you need it.One thing many of our customers like about this wiring harness is that this is a simple plug and play to your vehicle. There's no modification required at all, and you don't have to worry about drilling any holes in the vehicle for the ground connection, unlike some of the competitor's wiring harnesses where you have to do that. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we need to locate our vehicle's wiring harness for our taillights.

We have a look on our driver side on the rearmost frame cross member. Right next to our spare tire, we find our connector. There's a black tab on it right here. If we press down on this tab, we can pull to separate. Sometimes it's easier to use a screw driver to help press down as you pull back.

With our connector separated, you're going to take some dielectric grease and place it on both ends.We can take our wiring harness, match up the two ends, and connect it in line to the factory harness. We went ahead and routed our wiring harness over to our back driver's side, inside the bumper. We have it secured in place with one of the zip ties to the factory wiring harness here. This will keep it from rattling around and keep it out of the way. We've routed our 4-pole over towards the center of our hitch, secured up the excess with another zip tie, and then we brought the wire down behind the hitch where we have it secured in place using the dust cover on the 4-pole to keep it from dragging on the ground. Now we'll use a 4-pole flat tester, which we have available on our website as part number I26, to test out our wiring.

Let's start by turning on our headlines, and as you can see, our taillight and running light functions are working fine. We'll do our left turn signal now. That's working as well. Try our right. That's working. Now let's step on our brakes. Both of our brake lights are working, and with our foot on the brake pedal, we'll go through our turn signals again to make sure everything functions properly. Great. Everything is working like it's supposed to, and that completes our look at and showing you how to install the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 41165 on this 2010 GMC Canyon.
