How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness Adapter on a 2011 Ford F-150

Today on our 2011 Ford F-150, we are going to be installing the 4 to 7 pole connector part number 37185 by Hopkins. This will be in conjunction with our Tow Ready universal mounting bracket part number 18136, and our Draw-Tite wiring to connect the power and brake control circuit part number 5506 by Draw-Tite. First, we will connect the universal mounting bracket to the seven pole connector. We'll… see more >

Good video. I have a couple questions though. Does this procedure eliminate the need for a progressive brake controller and if so what keeps the trailer brakes from locking up every time you hit the brake pedal?

The installation of this part only provides an electrical receptacle to be wired to towing vehicles that did not have one factory installed. If your trailer has electric brakes installed then you should use them. In that case you will need to additionally install a trailer brake controller near the driver if your towing vehicle does not have one factory installed. Of brake controllers there are old-style time delayed controllers that do not have very smooth braking, and there are proportional controllers which smoothly apply your trailer brakes proportionally to the braking of your towing vehicle. I like the Tekonsha # 90885 controller. I like the Tekonsha brand and the manual braking lever that wireless types do not have.

I have a 2011 F150 that I want to convert from a 4-way to 7-way. This video at the 4 minute mark shows to connect the wiring kit to the blue wire. When I called I was told I needed to buy a brake controller and plug it in under the dash. Not sure what to do?

If your truck has the factory 4-flat then you would need to use this kit to create a functional 7-way and get the brake signal from the brake controller to the trailer connection point. I have included a help article that explains how to install the # ETBC7. Then depending on which brake controller you choose you can get the associated wiring harness that connects under the dash to the brake controller of your chosen brand. I have included a link to the brake controllers that are compatible with your 11 F-150 for your reference.

I have a 2012, seems that I have to run the same wires, because my truck doesnt have the red and blue wire under the bed. Am I correct? Is the 2012 the same as this one 2011?

Both the 2011 and the 2012 Ford F-150s are part of the twelfth generation of the F-150. This wiring harness is used if the truck did not come equipped with a functional 7-way. If your truck has a 4-flat, then you would need to install this harness and route the 12V power wire from the battery, and the brake signal from the brake controller (if not equipped). I have included a couple of help article that should help with this information.
