How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, were going to install the Tow Ready T1 Connector, part number 118425. First, were going to need to access the rear cargo area. Then were going to go ahead and remove the rear tail light assemblies. Each assembly has two fasteners holding it in position. Well need to pry the center out of the plastic pushpin fasteners. Were going to get each of them started with a small pocket screwdriver then Ill use a larger screwdriver to really get that center pried out so that we can release the fastener.

Carefully, pull and wiggle the tail light assembly so it disconnects from the body. There are several alignment tabs that you cannot see until you remove it. Next, to make it a little easier, I'm going to go ahead and remove bolt connectors to the tail light assembly. To do this, well simply unlock the red locking tab, press down on the lock connection, and disconnect it from the tail light assembly. The smaller plug, its a black locking tab.

Press and remove. Now, I'm going to go ahead and repeat the same process on the passengers side. Now here on the drivers side, we can take our new Tow Ready connector with the yellow and brown wire and plug in line with the manufacturers to know that these two plugs are identical. Well plug the Tow Ready connector here into the manufacturers and then the other end of our Tow Ready connector where well replace the manufacturers into the back of the tail light. Before we can reinstall the tail light though, we need to take our white and green wire end connectors and feed them down between the plastic cover of the bumper and the sheet metal of the body so that we can route it over to the passengers side.

Were also going to take the new 4-pole connector and feed it down between the plastic bumper cover and the body. Alright, with that done, we can now here on the drivers side reinstall the tail light assembly. Now underneath the vehicle, we need to route the white and green wire over to the passengers side. Any time youre routing a wire, you need to be mindful of moving components such as steering or suspension or excessive heat such as the exhaust. So to route the white and green wire, were actually going to go through the inside of the bumper beam using a piece of air line or metal as as a pull wire and then tape our wire directly to our pull wire or pull tubing.

This will allow us to get it over to the passengers side nice and easily. Once we get our wire over to the passengers side, we can go ahead and use our same pull wire or tubing to assist us in routing it out between the plastic bumper cover and the sheet metal or body work of the vehicle. Along with the green wire is the white wire. The white wire has a pre-formed ring terminal already on it. This is our ground wire. We need to attach it directly to the sheet metal of the vehicle. Using a self-tapping screw provided in our install kit, were going to go ahead and catch it now. Now, we can go ahead and make our wiring connections just as we did on the drivers side. With all our connections made, well go ahead and reinstall the tail light assembly. Alright, before I get my wires, well go ahead and route the 4-pole over to the center of the hitch, then using some black zip ties, well secure our wiring to the top of the hitch. Alright, now with all our wires secured, that will complete the install of our Tow Ready T1 connector, part number 118425, on our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
