How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we're going to install the Hopkins Trailer Connector, part number HM40975. First, we're going to mount our bracket here to the hitch. It comes with two self-threading screws for the installation. All right, with our bracket mounted, we can now go ahead and take a screwdriver or a trim tool. We're going to go ahead and get our connection which is mounted inside the bumper cover. As you can see from the manufacturer, it comes with a cap on it.

We'll go ahead and press on the locking tab and remove the cap. Now, we're going to need a little more length to get down to our bracket and our new 7-pole connector, so I'll go ahead and disconnect it up here where it mounts to the underbody of the vehicle. Now, you can see that we have the length that we need to get down to our new 7-pole connector and bracket. To mount the 7-pole in the bracket, we'll simply line it up and it snaps in place. With our 7-pole mounted, we can now go ahead and install the connector into the back.

All right, as a personal preference, I also like to just go ahead and take a black zip tie and secure my wire here to the hitch. Then I'll take my side cutters and cut off the excess from our zip tie. Now that we've secured our wire, we're going to head up under the hood and add our fuse to the fuse block. We'll need to add a 10 amp to the fuse box under the hood. There's an open port here labeled M4 on the lid where we'll install a 10-amp fuse.

That will complete the install of our Hopkins 7-pole connection on our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Here's a tech tip: If after your install, your 7 or 4-pole signals do not work, you may need to return to the dealer for a body control module reflash.
