How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2013 Smart Fortwo

All right today in this 2013 Smart Car ForTwo, we're going to install part number 18252 from Tow Ready. OK, to start off our install, we need to get access to a wiring harness, so open the back hatch and the tailgate. Then we're going to remove two panels, one on each side. And then the floor panel, the bottom, well lift up as well. Then we'll take our wire harness and route it from underneath the plastic to the inside of the corner panel on the driver's side first. Then we'll go ahead and locate our wire harness. It's going to be the wires plugged directly into the taillight. So we'll go ahead and disconnect the connector from the taillight. Now we'll go ahead and test our wires.

There's a factory ground located nearby on the car, so we'll use that for a tester that comes with the kit. We'll take a clip and ground it, and then we user our tester to test the socket, find out which wire does what. Starting off, we'll look for a running light circuit. Turns out it's a brown wire with a light blue stripe. So we'll use a quick-splice connector that comes with the kit, and we'll go ahead and make our connection. After we make our connection, we'll go ahead and test it real fast to make sure we've got a good connection. Now we'll look for our left turn signal. Testing turned out to be black with a white stripe.

So we'll go ahead and connect our yellow wire to that wire. We'll go ahead and fix our ground for our wire harness. That'll be our white wire. We're going to add a separate ring terminal to it, then we're going to run it down to the factory ground. We'll tuck it behind the plastic and down to the ground. Once that's been attached, we'll go ahead and turn our attention to the green wire in the wire harness.

We'll also pull that underneath the plastic as well, towards the center of our car a little bit. And we're going to have run this over to the passenger side. Now, since this wire is not long enough, we're going to use a simple piece of green scrap wire we have, and we're just going to run it over to the other side. We'll use the buck connector to make our connections. Then we'll go ahead and take our green wire and run that over to the passenger side taillight. Once again, we'll go ahead and disconnect the wire harness going to the taillight and then test it.

Our right turn signal turned out to be black with a green stripe. At this point we can go ahead and tuck our green wire underneath the bulb seal at the very edge of the back door. Once we make our connection, we're good to go. And then re-install our interior panels. Now at this point you have an option. You can take the wire harness and go out to a trailer and hide it underneath floor covering, or you can hide it behind the panel, and that's what we're going to do. We'll go ahead and tuck it behind our panel, then reinstall it. All right, with everything put back together, this is what it looks like. Now when we need to use it, we'll go ahead and open up the panel and pull out our wire harness. We'll pull it out. Instead of going over the top of the tailgate, we'll go ahead and run it out the side and below. Then we can go ahead and shut our tailgate. Our door seal will be thick enough where it won't hurt the wire. Now, it's always a good idea to test it before we try it on a trailer, so we'll go ahead and try it out. We'll take a ground clip and put it to the white wire, and then well test the ground wire for the running light circuit. Then your yellow wire for the left turn signal, then our green for the right turn signal. And our brake signal are going to be a constant signal on the green and yellow wires. OK, with everything working, that'll finish it for our install, part number 18252 from Tow Ready on our 2013 Smart ForTwo. .
