How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today in our 2014 Subaru Outback wagon, we'll be installing the tow-ready T1 wiring harness with 4-pole flat connector - Part Number 118467. To being our install, we'll first need to open up the rear hatch. Then we'll remove the center cargo cover and center foam tray. Next we'll remove the carpeted tray cover on the driver's side, and then the foam tray by removing the two push-pin fasteners that secure it. Next we'll need to remove the foam and carpet assembly that runs just behind the second row seating. To do this, we'll first need to remove the carpeting that snaps into the foam section. We'll simply get underneath the carpeting and gently pry it up. Then with the carpeting out of the way, we can now remove the two push pin fasteners.

With those out of the way, there's one more fastener underneath that we'll gently pry up on the center section at the back edge. It will release the fastener underneath. Now with the forward center section out of the way, on the driver's side underneath the interior trim panel, we'll locate the manufacturer's wiring and tow port. This will be near the forward cargo hold down. We'll reach underneath the carpeting, locate the wiring, and then the tow port and pull it free. Now with access to the tow port, we'll go ahead and take our T1 wiring harness and plug it directly into the manufacturer's wiring. Next, we'll go ahead and take our converter box and mount it.

We'll also mount it underneath the driver's side interior trim panel. To do this we'll remove the adhesive cover, slide it underneath the carpeting, and then firmly press it into place. As we reinstall the driver's side foam spare tire tool holder, we'll route the 4 pole wire underneath towards the spare tire well. Then as we put the center foam cargo tray in, we'll route the wire up and into the tray where it will be stored. Now with everything back in place, let's go ahead and show you the operation of your new 4 pole connector. We can route the 4 pole wire outside the vehicle being careful to stay away from the latch, as pinching the wire in the latch can harm it.

However, the weather stripping is thick enough that we can simply close the rear hatch on it. Next let's go ahead and test the new 4 pole wiring harness. Using a test light, we'll go ahead and put our ground clamp on the open terminal. Then testing the first terminal, which will be our brown wire. This will be our running lights. The second terminal will be the yellow wire for left turn and braking.

The third will be the green wire for right turn and braking. Now that we know that our 4 pole connector works, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of the tow-ready T1 wiring harness, Part Number 118467 on our 2014 Subaru Outback wagon. .
