How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2016 Subaru Forester

Today on our 2016 Subaru Forester we'll be taking a look at and installing the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118467. Now to access it, again you'll pull up on the tab and pull out your 4-pole connector from the back. Now this will sit down over the top of that weather seal, and that weather seal is going to be thick enough that when we close down our hatch it won't damage it. Just make sure it stays away from the center latch here so it doesn't get severed. You'll be able to come down and have access to that with your receiver on the backside. Now we're going to go ahead and test out our wire. To do so, we're going to take our ground and connect that to the ground side of our 4-pole.

Then we'll go ahead and test our running lights which is going to be that brown wire. See that we're a getting a constant signal. Now we're going to go ahead and test our left turn signal which will be that yellow wire. Then our right turn signal, which is that green wire. How about we test out the brake lights Green, yellow, that means we're good on both sides.

Now we're ready to hit the road. Cover it up and stow it away until you're ready to use it. To start our installation we'll go ahead and open the back end of our vehicle and remove all the floor coverings. This includes the divider that goes over the spare tire and all the foam. I'll remove the foam on this side and we can use a flat blade screwdriver to do so, or a turn panel removal tool. Go underneath, just pop them up.

Following the removal of the foam on the drivers side here we're going to pull back on the weather stripping and then just use that trim panel removal tool to get underneath the bottom side and pop it up. You just follow it down and find the tabs and lift up. Once you have them removed we'll set it off to the side. After you have the threshold removed on the back side we're then going to peel back and kind of inwards on this side panel piece. We'll take a flathead screw driver, pop open the tab for our tow hook here and pull it out of the way so we can access that 10 millimeter bolt. Go ahead and loosen it up.

Then we can pull that out of the way. This will give us enough room to pull back on the side and access our tow package. Want to pull back and you'll see our tow factory tow package that's taped off here with the blue tape. Go ahead and separate that tape just by cutting it and pulling it out of the way. Now we can connect our receiver, or female end, to that male end of our factory towing package that comes on the T-One Wiring Harness. Push it until it clicks in place. Go ahead an pull the rubber band off of this so you got a little bit more room to work with it. Now the control module is going to have a hole on the top. We can take a zip tie and zip tie that up to the inside here where you see the holes in the sheet metal. This will secure it so it's not dangling around. Go ahead and take your zip tie, put it through the hole, kind of tuck it back and around coming out the other side and securing it off. We'll snip off the end of that extra zip tie. Then go ahead and press this back into place. Pull back on that weather seal so you can get this edge snapped in and then reconnect that 10 millimeter bolt there to your anchor. Now if you look at how we had that foam piece pulled up to the side you can see that there's going to be a slot here on the side where we can lay our hardware. Then we'll reconnect our 2 snaps and lay this back over the top. Now we go ahead and put back in our threshold, slide it underneath and we're just going to push it into place. Make sure you take your screwdriver and kind of help it along with that weather seal that goes along the side. Insert the foam center. Your 4-Pole trailer connector will be hidden down here in that bottom compartment. That will do it for our review and installation of the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part number 118467 on our 2016 Subaru Forester.
