How to Install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness on a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe


Speaker 1: Today in our 2017 Hyndai Santa Fe, we're gonna be installing Tekonsha's T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part number 118571.This vehicle wiring harness is gonna provide you with all the necessary lighting you need for your trailer. This includes your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps and brake lamps. So you'll be DOT-compliant in all states.What's great about this harness is that it is powered with its own dedicated wire and fuse, so it won't interfere with any signals on your vehicle if there was a short on your trailer. The fuse would just open and you could replace it. The module will connect inline between your taillights, so whenever it sees a signal on one of your taillights, it then produces that signal and sends it down to your four-fold flat trailer connector.There's a dust cap located on the end, and this'll help keep out any dirt and debris when it's not in use. Additionally, it can be used to hold your harness up off the ground, right here on your trailer hitch.We'll begin our installation here at the back of the vehicle.

We'll open our lift gate, and we're gonna remove both of our passenger and driver side taillights. You'll need a flat-bladed screwdriver to remove the panel covering the bolts. There's two small indentions here that you can put your screwdriver in to pop this panel off. We'll do that on both sides.Remove the two screws located behind each panel.We'll then remove the taillight assemblies. You'll want to use a trim panel remover tool to help keep hold the headlight towards the rear.

And on the back side, we'll disconnect our electrical connector. You'll push in on the release tab there, and pull it out. We'll repeat that on the other side.We'll remove the pushpin, located on top of our fascia, underneath where our taillight was. We'll use a trim panel remover tool to pop up the center, and then pull the pin out. We'll do that on both sides.We'll then remove our under panels, located on both the driver and passenger side.

There'll be four pins you'll need to remove on the driver side, and three pins on the passenger side. Those will pop out just like the one up top. Once you've removed the pins, the panel will just pull out.We'll now use a fish wire to get our wiring up. We're using a piece of airline tubing. We're gonna feed that down our fascia here.We'll now take the yellow wire from our new harness, we're gonna tape it to our fish wire.

Now we'll use our fish wire to pull it up.We'll then cut our wire free, our fish wire.We'll connect the male end to the female end on the vehicle.Then we'll connect the female end of our new harness into the male end of our taillight assembly. We can then reinstall our taillight assembly.We'll then route the green and red wires from our driver side over to our passenger side. Make sure that you run a fish wire down, 'cause we're gonna need it to pull it back up. We'll then tape our wiring to our fish wire, and we're gonna bring it up just like we did on the other side.We'll then plug this side into our vehicle, and the other side into our taillight assembly, just as we did on the other side, and now we can reinstall this tail lamp.We'll now install our ground wire. Use the self-tapping screw provided in the kit, and we're just gonna run it right into the side of the body here, using a quarter-inch socket.Now take the large amount of black wire you got in your kit. We'll strip back this end, and you'll find a black wire coming off of your control box here. We're gonna use the yellow bud that come with the kit. Crimp on one end to your black wire, and we'll crimp the other end onto the black wire coming off of our control box.We'll now heat-shrink down our bud connector using a heat gun.We'll now use the two-sided tape that comes in the kit to secure our module. We're just gonna secure it to the back side of this panel here. You'll have to kind of reach up in there to feel for it, find it, stick it. You do want to make sure that the wires are facing down, so that way no moisture can collect and get into the box.We can then take our wiring, we're gonna route it over towards the center. This way we can keep our four-fold flat connector next to our hitch and ready to use, and bundle up any of that excess.We'll now need to run our black wire up to the front of the vehicle so we can connect it to the battery. So we're gonna go underneath, up into the engine compartment. I'm gonna route this wire now, then I'll show you the path that I took.When routing your wiring, you want to avoid any excessively hot items, such as your exhaust, or moving components, such as your steering and suspension. I like to follow factory wiring whenever possible.So I went ahead and connected it here to this wiring, we went over our rear suspension. We came out here alongside the gas tank, we ran it down along the gas tank, through the extra opening here in our fuel lines, down and around, and we followed our fuel lines up and just tucked it into this plastic cover, running it up along the way, periodically putting some zip ties just to make sure it doesn't come out of that cover.Once we've got it here to the front of the cover, we're gonna need to get it up into our engine compartment.Before we put it up in our engine compartment, while you're down here is a good time to put your panels back up, 'cause we're done down here and we won't need to be back.We'll take our fish wire, we're gonna feed it back and down. That way we can get it below to bring our wiring up.We'll now take our black wire and we're gonna tape it to our fish line. Now we'll go back up top and pull it up. And it's a good idea, once you've got it pulled up, to take a peek back down below and ensure it didn't get snagged or caught up on anything, and that you do have it pulled all the way.We're now gonna take our harness that comes in our kit, and we're gonna cut this in half, strip back each end of the harness. On one end, we're going to crimp on a heat-shrink bud connector, and on the other end, we'll crimp on the ring terminal that comes in the kit.We're gonna connect the ring terminal end to our battery positive post. We'll need to remove the nut located there using a 10-millimeter socket.We'll then connect our ring terminal to our battery positive post by removing this nut here with a 12-millimeter socket.We'll flat our ring terminal on it, then reinstall our nut.We'll then take our black wire that we routed up, we're gonna bring it over towards our harness. Here we'll trim it to length. I like to give myself a little bit of excess. We'll strip back this end, and this will crimp to the other end of the yellow bud connector from our harness.We'll then heat-shrink down our bud connector.We'll then take our 15-amp fuse that comes in the kit, we're gonna install it into our harness.Now you can plug in a tester, or plug it up to your trailer and verify that everything's working properly. You wanna make sure that you have your left turn signal, your right turn signal, your tail lamps, and brake lamps. And with everything working properly, you can go back and zip-tie up any loose wiring, and you're ready to hit the road.And that completes our installation of Tekonsha's T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness on our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe.
