How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2017 Subaru Forester

Today on our 2017 Subaru Forester we're going to be taking a look at and installing the tow ready T1 vehicle wiring harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector, part number 118467. Here's what this wiring is going to look like once it's installed on the vehicle. As you can see we've got access to it from underneath the trunk here. When it's not in use it's easy to tuck it away inside the trunk so that way it maintains a nice, clean look when not in use, but it's also very easy to access whenever you do need it. Now with this wiring one of the nice things is that with the way it's set up, it plugs directly into the vehicle's existing wiring system instead of having to put T connectors behind the tail lights and then run it down. This way it's a lot simpler and a lot more straightforward.

Also, it's got a module box that helps protect your vehicle's electrical system from anything that may happen because of a short in the trailer or some sort of electrical surge. Also, since it plugs into the existing factory wiring in the vehicle, there's no extra ground required to where you have to put a screw into the body of your vehicle. Whenever you do want to use this wiring, you simply pull it out from underneath the cargo area here and then you can close the trunk. You want to make sure that you avoid the latch area so that the wire doesn't get pinched or damaged and then it doesn't work anymore. You keep it away from there and shut the trunk, then you've got your 4-pole wiring ready to use. Then again whenever you're done you simply bundle it back up and put it in the trunk.

Now let's show you how to install this wiring. First thing we'll need to do is we're going to have to take everything out from back here in order to gain access underneath. Then over here there's 2 little push pins that tie this section down. I'm going to use a trim panel tool, but if you don't have one you can just use a flat head screwdriver. You just need to get under here and pop them out. Then you can remove this.

Then once we're over here there's a 10-millimeter bolt that's under this and then a screw in this hook and we'll need to take those out in order to be able to remove the side paneling. In order to get to that 10-millimeter bolt you'll need to lower this hook then you just take a flat head screwdriver, get in there, pry a little bit and it'll pop out because it's just got 2 little retaining tabs on it. Then you can remove that 10-millimeter bolt. Take the cargo hook and set it aside. Then inside this little cargo hook got a Phillips head screw that you need to loosen up. Once you've got the screw out of there you need to take this and twist it to the left and it'll come out.

Then the last thing we need to do before we can pull the side panel out is we need to take this threshold and get it out of the way. In order to that you just grab it and gently pull upwards until the push pins that hold it down are released. Then you can take that and set it aside. Now there's a few push pins that hold in this side panel, so you just gently take the bottom and begin to pry outwards. It should pop right off. You can see those push pins there. Then right back here we've got this blue tape that's holding the connector for our wiring harness. Now we'll take the 4-pole wiring and we'll just make sure that it's run underneath of our side panel here so that we'll have access to it when we put it all back together. Now we can take the connector that's on our new wiring harness and plug it into the factory wiring harness on the vehicle. You want to be sure it clicks so that you know that it's locked in place. Then you can take the module box for it and find a good mounting point. You can use some double sided sticky tape or you could also use a self tapping screw to hold it in place. Now I want to find a good place to mount our little module box. I'm just going to do that right on the inside here of the body, and I'm going to take a little bit of rubbing alcohol in order to clean that to make sure it adheres well. Then I can take some double sided sticky tape, put it on the box, peel that back, then I'll mount it just on the inside here where it's going to stay. All right so now we can get all of our pins lined back up and push the side panel back in. We'll work the weather stripping to make sure it's not tucked under the edge there. Then we can reinstall our 2 cargo hooks. Then on this lower one you want to make sure that tab gets lined back up properly when you put it in. Then we'll pop our covering back into place. Now we're ready to reinstall our threshold and all of our cargo flooring. Now that we've got everything hooked up, let's go ahead and test it to make sure that we've got power for all our lights. We're going to use part number I26 in order to do that. First let's check our tail lights. Left turn signal, right turn signal, and our brake lights. With everything working properly, we're ready to hit the road. That's going to complete our look at and installation of the tow ready T1 vehicle wiring harness with 4-pole flat trailer connector, part number 118467 on our 2017 Subaru Forester.
