How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2018 Ford Explorer

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ford Explorer, we're gonna be taking a look at, I'm gonna be showing you how to install the Hopkins seven and four pole trailer connector, part number HM40975. This is what our plug looks like when it's installed. It's gonna provide you with a seven-pole connection and also a four-pole connection. Now your four-pole side is gonna provide you with your ground, both turn signals, and your running lights, along with your brake lights. Your seven-pole is gonna provide all that along with reverse signal and also, if your trailer has brakes, it's gonna provide you with that connection also. Both caps are gonna be spring-loaded. They are gonna have a rubber insert that's gonna seal around this edge.

It's gonna help keep any moisture, dirt, and grime from getting onto your connections and help keep them from corroding. Your plug is gonna be constructed from a nice, durable plastic, so it's gonna hold up in all the elements. Another thing I like about this plug is on the front of the cap it's gonna tell you the functions of each wire and where they connect into the plug. It's also gonna come with a black powder coated metal bracket to mount it in place. Now that we've gone over some of the features, we'll show you how to get it installed.First thing we're gonna do to start our installation is we need to remove our seven-pole plug.

Right here on the back, we're gonna push down on this tab, pull out, and we'll take a small Phillips head screwdriver. We're gonna remove this lower bracket and then we'll just install our new bracket right in place. We can use our existing hardware. One thing I do suggest is on this side of the bracket, it's got an oblong hole. The nut is a little bit small and I don't wanna take a chance on it pulling through that hole, so I'm gonna take a small washer and put it in place there.

And then we'll put our nut on and we can tighten it into place.Next we'll take our seven and four pole plug, snap it into the bracket. We'll take our existing wiring, plug it right into the back, push it in until you hear it snap. Next we'll test out our lights using an alternate power source. Left turn, right turn, brakes, running lights. And that'll do it for a look at and installation of the Hopkins seven and four pole trailer connector, part number HM40975 on our 2018 Ford Explorer..
