How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on this 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee we'll be having a look at and showing how to install the Hopkins seven and four-pole trailer connector socket with mounting bracket, part number HM40975. Here's what our connector looks like installed. On the right side of it behind this dust cover we have our four-pole connector. This is going to give you the basic lighting functions that are required by law in order for you to tow a trailer safely and legally. You'll have your taillights, your running lights, your turn signals, and your brake lights. On the left side of it we have our seven-way connector. This gives you your lighting functions, as well as a reverse light output, which is useful for our trailers that have reverse lights, or if you're towing a boat trailer, it has an electric lockout for the brakes so when you go to back up the trailer you don't have to worry about the brakes being applied.

You will also have a charge line and you also will have a brake controller output wire so if you're running electrical trailer brakes on your trailer, if you install a brake controller inside your Grand Cherokee, you will be able to control those brakes. On the inside of our covers we have a nice rubber gasket which will help better seal it to help keep dirt and debris from entering our connector when it's not in use. Both of these doors are spring loaded too. What's great about this connector versus other ones on the market is that we have these nice heavy duty spring loaded doors to help protect our connections when they're not in use, and we have the ability to do a four-pole connector or a seven-way connector without having to run an adapter and our seven-way connector to reduce down to a four-pole flat. This is a very factory-like connector. A lot of your trucks out there that have factory hitches and wiring have this connector on it already from the factory.

This is just like getting the factory tow package on your vehicle without having to purchase it from the dealer. This also plugs directly into your factory tow package without any cutting or splicing requiring, so it's a very quick and easy install, saving you time and money. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. The first thing we need to do for our install is find a place to mount our mounting bracket. Our hitch has an attachment point on it where we can secure the bracket to that. We'll use some screws and nuts. This kit does come with self-tapping screws if you prefer to use those.

We'll now use a screwdriver and a wrench to tighten down our hardware. Now we'll take our connector now we'll snap it into our bracket. Right above our connector we have our factory tow package connector right here. It's clipped to our bumper with a panel fastener. You can use a trim panel tool to pop it loose or you can just grab it and pull it apart. We have another fastener up here which holds the wiring to the body of the vehicle.

We can pull it down away from that and have plenty of slack in it now. We'll press in on this tab here and remove the cover on the plug. We'll put a little dielectric grease inside of our connector to help better protect from the elements. We have this dielectric grease on our website if you need some. Now we'll take our connector and we'll plug it in the back of our new connector. We'll push until it clicks in place. Now that we have everything mounted and connected, there is one final thing that more than likely you're going to have to do. Most Jeep Grand Cherokees have the factory tow package connector disabled from the factory. That requires you to make a trip to the dealer to have the computer programmed to enable it. All dealership can do this for a minimal fee. That completes our look at and showing how to install the Hopkins seven and four-pole trailer connector socket with mounting bracket, part number HM40975, on this 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
