Review of the Yakima Roof Rack on a 2016 Honda CR-V

Today on our 2016 Honda CRV, we're going to be testing the Yakima round bar roof rack system, consisting of part numbers Y00409, these are the round 58 inch cross bars, part number Y00146, these are the baseline tower for the Yakima cross bars, and part number Y03536, which is the round bar SL adapter kit for the Yakima baseline towers, and part numbers Y06148 and Y06152, which are the base clip fit kits for the Honda CRV. The Yakima round bar roof rack system is great for carrying a wide variety of accessories on your roof while freeing up space inside your vehicle for you and your family. The two bars have a combined carrying capacity of 165 pounds although you always want to double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure your roof can withstand that weight. Both of the end caps do come with knock outs which you can replace with the Yakima same key system so you can actually utilize this with your Yakima accessories and make everything key alike. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the roof rack system, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We have our rear bar partially assembled on our table here, and our next step is to install our base tower to the other end of our bar. So we'll take our baseline tower, take this plastic adapter piece, and that gets pushed on the top here till you hear a couple clicks. Then we'll take our round bar adapter, place that, line up with the screw, then we'll come around to the front of the baseline tower, pull this portion out so we can see the screw that we need to tighten down with our included tool.

Now as we tighten this down, we just want to loosely tighten it up, because we want to still be able to move it along our bar to get our spread between our towers accurate. Slide it on, and we'll put our end cap on here so it doesn't slide back off. And then we'll get our proper spread between our towers. You can find this measurement in your instructions. Once you have it where it needs to be, we'll tighten it down the rest of the way. Now the nice thing about this tool, once you tighten this down, you'll actually hear audible clicks to let you know that you've tightened it to its proper specification and this is also so you don't over tighten it as well. Another thing I'd like to take note, you see these three notches here and this knob here.

Now if we we're to loosen that up, if I was to move this, you can see that the foot moved a little bit. So with this particular vehicle, we want it set towards the back of the car, as you can see here. Next we'll take our foot pad here from our fit kit and we'll push that into place as well. At this point, you can also put your clamps into place, but I like to wait for that after I set this on the vehicle and get the spacing set up so I don't possibly scratch up or damage the vehicle with the clamps still in place. We'll set our bars into place. First we're going to make sure that they're even on both sides, but then we're going to measure from center of the bar to center of the bar for our crossbar spread and this measurement you will find in your instructions.

Now we'll open up our doors, insert our clamps, and start to tighten them down. So we'll take our clamps, you can see this open portion here, that'll hold in like so and you can see this kind of hovering above our door edge here. To lower that down, we'll go to this screw, tighten it down, that'll lower it into place. Then we'll come to the center here. And right now, we'll just snug it up against the door and we'll repeat this process for our driver side.

You can close that up now and our final step is to add our end caps, which you can see these two portions here, these two hooks go into these two areas on our end cap. We'll put those into place, and then we'll load up our gear and hit the road. And there you have it for the Yakima round bar roof rack system on our 2016 Honda CRV.
