How to Install the Yakima Tracks for Roof Racks on a 2004 Ford F-250

Today on this 2004 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cab, we're going to install part number Y01127. This is the Yakima 54 inch tracks for roof racks. These tracks mount directly to naked roof vehicles, creating a strong, low profile attachment point for Yakima Control Towers with Landing Pad One. It does come with all the tools needed to install. You may need a 1/8 inch torque head driver for the fasteners when you install it, at the very end. All right, now we'll go ahead and show you how the track rack installs.

This is one of our tracks right here. It has two pieces, it has the metal on top and it has a plastic liner on the bottom. We'll take the plastic part underneath and we're just going to slide it off. We'll use this as a template to drill out our holes for the rack. We'll go ahead and just lay it on there, give us a good idea how it's going to fit on the vehicle. It's always a good idea to keep it close to the structural part like this edge here or closer to the outside edge of a door.

That's usually the strongest area on the roof. Then, once we get an idea where we want it, we'll go ahead and make our first mark. We're going to have them even on both sides. What I did, is I took a square, just brought it up against the edge right here, should be roughly equal on both sides. We're going to look for easy to remember measurement and about where we have our track rack bottom and we'll go ahead and make a mark. In our case, ours came out to 2 1/2 inches.

We'll take this measurement and do the same thing on the other side. We'll take this corner, inaudible 00:01:42 with our mark and to help hold it in place, we'll just use some good old painter's tape. Now we'll go ahead and take our 2 1/2 inch measurement and we'll just double check it going towards the front and then we'll tape the other end down. We have the passenger side in place, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the other side. We'll go ahead and take a tape measure and we'll get a few measurements to make sure it's square. We'll hook the inside edge of the track on one side and measure to the other side.

We'll go to the front and transfer that measurement to make sure it's the same width. Next you want to check to make sure they're square, you want to go diagonal across to measure. Let's go ahead and break the tape over our hole here, take a marker, we'll go ahead and mark our holes on each end. We're going to need seven attachment points on each side, so we got two covered at the very ends. In the middle, make sure you have enough room for the hardware that we install into the roof, without hitting any of the cross members underneath. In this case, we can actually see the cross members on the headliner here, so we want to stay away from, apart from this angled section here where it comes closer to the edge. I'm going to use a drill bit to mark our centers here. I'm using a drill bit that matches the hole, which is about 15/64ths. I'm just going to mark it. I'm going to go on down the line and mark our holes. I'm just going to put it in the center for our pilot hole. Now I have our holes marked, we can go ahead and take these tracks out of the way. Okay, now we'll take our marked holes and we'll go ahead and enlarge them to 1/8th of an inch. To keep us from going too far into the headliner, we actually added some electric tape to the end of our bit, we left about a quarter inch or so left over to help stop the drill bit. I'm going to go on down the line. Now that we've got our pilot holes drilled out, we'll go ahead and go back at it with a 9/32nd drill bit. Once again we'll put some tape on our drill bit to control our depth and we'll very slowly drill on through. Now go onto our next hole. Now to finish up the edge here and make our insert fit as flush as possible, I'm actually going to use a step bit, just to clean off the top edge to get the rest of the tailings off, not much just light pressure to clean it up. We'll go ahead and clean it up and we'll add something to protect the metal. I'm going to use a paint marker and be kind of generous on the paint to cover up the edges. We'll let this set for a minute and we'll continue on doing the rest of our holes in the same fashion. Next we'll go ahead and shoot a plus nut that makes our attachment to our roof. This is a plus nut and there's a small rubber washer that we have to add to it. There's a couple different black washers in the kit, make sure you use the soft rubber one. This assembly fit inside here. Now there's a special tool that comes with the kit to attach it, it comes with this spreader stock here, this block that slides onto it and on the larger threads, gets a washer, and then a nut. The other end of this gets our plus nut, we just run it in until the threads start coming out the other side. We'll take the whole assembly, put it into place as far as it can go, adjustable wrench on this side, go ahead and get a grip on it, then on top we'll use a half inch wrench and we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Now this will be rather difficult at the git go, you'll tighten up again once you get the plus nut expanded all the way on the inside. When it starts doing that you're finished, release the nut, un-thread the assembly. All right, you can see how the rubber washer has a nice ring around the plus nut and we're good to go. All right, and we'll continue on down the line. Now we can go ahead and do some assembly on the rails. Original plastic bottom, we'll go ahead and slide back into it's track. Next into our tracks, we're going to add these square nut plates. They just fit into the track right here. We need to install four of these guys. Now these plates do not come with this kit, they do come with a separate part number, you need what's called the landing pad for our tower to sit on top of. The landing pads are going to be part number Y00221 and you'll need two of these part number. We'll go ahead and do that to both rails and set them aside. Before we put our rails into place, we'll go ahead and get this hardware ready to go. We're going to seal these up with the supplied sealant. We'll cover up the hole, basically we're just going to cover up the opening so the threads will be coated and we'll go around the outside edge as well, that way so we can't get any water to come in. Let's go ahead and lay our rail into place, try to be as accurate as possible and we need to install the cap. This cap and this screw will go together at the end of the rail. All right, now we're going to do our front end first, simply because there's going to be a slight bow and this will be the sharpest point, so go ahead and get this out of the way, get it started. We're using a 1/8th inch hex head bit to get the screw started. Now let's go ahead and install the rest of the screws and they'll just get a flat washer. This will be a small black plastic flat washer. All right, we'll go ahead and hand tighten them down. We don't have to get them really tight, but tight enough to compress the flat washer a little bit should work. Clean up some of the excess sealant. With the passenger side done, same thing on the driver's side. With that, our install is finished for the Yakima 54 inch tracks for roof racks. By itself, it can't really do much without additional parts. So let's go ahead and install our landing pads that we worked with a little bit earlier. All right, now to install, let's go ahead and gather a couple of the nut plates, make it a little easier to get to and then we'll add our landing pad. Inside the well on both ends will get this cap screw with a metal flat washer and a plastic spacer washer. It will sit just like that and fit into the well, one on each side. We'll go ahead and line these up with the nut plates and we'll just get them started. We don't have to tighten them down, but just get them started. We're going to be using 5 millimeter Allen key, or tool. Okay, still need them loose enough so we can move them around. That's what's nice about the track rack, is that you can slide these bars wherever you want after you loosen these up. Okay, we've got one done, let's add another one to this rail and do the same thing over on the driver's side. We're also going to need the Yakima Control Towers, part number Y00214. We're going to use the round 58 inch cross bars from Yakima, part number is Y00409. Let's go ahead and loosely assemble our bars. We'll go ahead and pop open the covers here and there's a bolt here we have to loosen up. The towers do come with the tool to loosen it up and we can go ahead and slide them on the end of our bars. We'll go ahead and take our caps, put them in the end of the bar, push them in to get them started and we can go ahead and use a soft mallet to go ahead and drive them in the rest of the way. You can go ahead and do the same thing on the other side. All right, one down, one to go. Let's take our cross bars and we'll go ahead and put them into the landing pads and we'll make sure that this is completely opened up. Driver's side is in, let's do the same thing over on the passenger side. Let's go ahead and add our second rail. Once we're satisfied with the way they sit left to right, we'll go ahead and tighten down these screws and you really don't have to crank these guys down at all, just get them nice and firm and they kind of wedge together so you don't have to rely on really torquing them down. One side done, let's go ahead and do the other side. All right, next it's a simple matter and this is personal preference on sliding your rails to their proper position that you want. Once we have them positioned where we want them and we can go ahead and tighten the landing pads to the track. The same tool that tightened down this bolt will do these guys as well. They go into a little pocket right here and we'll just tighten them up. Again, you don't really have to crank them but get them tight and maybe a quarter turn. Then to lock them in position, just snap the cover back on and you can't remove it. Let's do the other side. Also if you didn't need to use these right off the bat and didn't want them on your truck, undo the covers and we can completely remove them. Then the landing pads, when not in use, have their own covers. We'll go ahead and put our rear rail back into place, snap them down. Okay, with that, that will finish it for part number Y01127, the Yakima 54 inch tracks for roof racks on our 2004 Ford F250 Super Duty Crew Cab. .
